The best time to mow Bermuda, tips for planting flowers
By Shay Smith
For the Forsyth County News
Q. When can I mow my
Bermudagrass lawn?
A. Mow the lawn when
it first turns green (which it is
beginning to do) with a reel
mower set at 3/4 to 1 inch or a
rotary mower set as low as
possible without scalping the
lawn. Bermuda should be
mowed before the grass gets
taller than 11/2 to 2 inches.
On the same topic, prac
tice grasscycling. Grasscy
cling is simply leaving grass
clippings on your lawn. Grass
clippings decompose quickly

Q. I would like to have a
cut flower garden this year.
Do you have any suggestions
of some flowers that are
easy to grow?
A. It is easy and inexpen
sive to grow annual cut flow
ers from seed. Perennials
often require an extra year of
growth before you can begin
cutting flowers. Most cut
flowers go to seed and stop
flowering if you do not cut
them regularly.
Many cut flower and wild
flower seeds should have been
planted back in the fall.
However, some seeds can be
planted this weekend in a

cut flowers require full sun. If
the soil is very poor, add com

have well-drained soils.
When it comes to planting
the seeds, be sure to follow

Q. Last year, fire ants
took over our yard. What
can we do this year to pre
vent them?
FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS Sunday, April 4,2004 •
A. To control fire ants in
your yard, you have several
options. If you prefer not to
use chemicals, you can try the
hot water method, which kills
about 60 percent of a mound.
Broadcast baits work for a
longer period of time than the
individual mound treatments
and they eventually sterilize
the queen.
With baits however, you
will not see results immedi
ately.
Worker ants forage for
food and love to eat greasy or
oily materials. Some of the
broadcast bait treatments are
actually corn grits, coated in
insecticide, then dipped in
soybean oil. With the baits,
you broadcast them in your
yard and wait several months
for the queen to become ster
ile.
With the mound treat
ments, you actually pour them
on the mound and see results
quickly, but not permanently.
You can actually use mound
treatments on some of the fire
ant beds in critical areas, then
use the broadcast baits for
overall control.
