Xplosion opens season with tough loss
From staff reports
In what could have easily
been billed as "The Game,"
the Atlanta Xplosion
women's professional foot
ball team based in here in
Forsyth kicked off the
regular season at the home of
the defending Eastern Con
ference Champion New York
Sharks last weekend.
The season got off to a
bang with the Xplosion build
ing an imposing 21-7 lead
after three quarters, but New
York proved resilient in the
fourth quarter, scoring three
unanswered touchdowns to
pull off a shocking 28-21
win.
After Xplosion captains
Charmaine Chin. Sue
Cackowski, Natasha'Sian,
Charlene Vance. Kiwanii
Gibson, arid Dee Ember won
the coin toss at midfield,
lethal returner Angela Rowe
took matters into her own
hands, taking the contest's
opening kickoff 80 yards
untouched for a score. With
the new’ season just 15 sec
onds old. Atlanta took a 6-0
lead but failed on the point
after attempt.
Following Atlanta's kick
off to New York, the Xplos
ion’s physical defense found
tough going against the
Sharks' no-huddle offensive
attack. In fact. New York
Quarterback Vai Halesworth
guided the veteran unit all
the way down to a first-and
goal from the Atlanta 6-yard
line. But from there,
Atlanta’s “Darkside De
fense" took over.
After a forced fumble and
recovery by Atlanta was nul
lified by a neutral zone
penalty. New York was
pushed back to the 31-yard
line on consecutive sacks by
Celeste Rausch and Ember.
New York attempted a last
gasp pass attempt on fourth
and-long but Atlanta held,
forcing a turnover on downs.
But Atlanta's ‘ Bomb
squad" offense couldn't find
their rhythm against New
York's strong defensive unit.
Led by their experienced
Linebacker Missy Mar
morale. the Sharks forced a
three-and-out and an Xplo
sion punt. Yet as the shanked
punt sailed towards the
Atlanta sideline, the Xplo
sion coaching staff made a
costly blunder. By not having

tying score.
This mental error was the
first of many Atlanta would
have on the day New York
added the extra point and
grabbed the lead at 7-6 in the
first quarter.
The Xplosion returned the
ensuing kickoff 30 yards,
Rowe sprinting into Shark
territory with her deadly
speed, only to have the
return brought back 25 yards
to the Atlanta 32 on a block
ing penalty.
The following possession
was marked by more lapses,
as a holding call and false
start only added to Atlanta's
struggling momentum. On
fourth down, the punt unit
lined up again but this time,
the Sharks blocked the
attempt.
With their backs against
the wall at their own 28-yard
line, the Xplosion's stingy
defense again held with a
team sack on fourth down to
give the ball back to Atlanta.
The second quarter began
with both teams trading field
position over the next several
possessions, Atlanta starting
to improve in moving the
chains.
Atlanta’s offensive woes
finally dissipated midway
through the second stanza
with a Captain-to-Captain
strike of 35-yards from Sue
Cackowski to Sian.
Three plays later. Cack
owski hooked up with rookie
sensation Audra Thomas for
a beautiful 33-yard touch
down pass. Another miscue
on the extra point prevented
Atlanta from converting, but
the Xplosion regained the

lead at 12-7 and held their
advantage as time expired in
the half.
The third qiftirter belong
ed to the Xplosion. After
forcing yet another three
and-out. the Sharks got off a
short punt, giving Atlanta
decent field position at the
New York 43. On third down,
Cackowski went up top to
Rowe again, who took the
pass 33 yards to paydirt.
Atlanta failed on the 2-point
conversion but led 18-7.
The next New York pos
session was marked with
Sharks quarterback Hales
worth being pressured and
sacked yet again, setting up
another punt that allowed
Atlanta’s special teams to
shine again. Atlanta's punt
return set up a wall and final
ly allowed captain Char
maine Chin to get into open
field and display her talents.
Chin took the punt 60 yards
down to the Sharks' 5-yard
line.
But this time. Cackowski
could not march the Xplosion
into the end zone, forcing
kicker Mary Kay Bateman to
come in and add a 24-yard
field goal to push the Xplosion
advantage to 21-7 with 5:30
remaining in the third.
Atlanta’s attacking de
fense forced another turnover
on downs during the Sharks’
ensuing possession, but
before Atlanta could put the
game away. New York picked
off a Cackowski pass for the
second time and swung the
game's momentum as they
entered the fourth quarter.
