Interest owed can escalate rapidly for borrowers unable to repay the loan by the due date typically the day the borrower gets a weekly pay check from a job. The practice has become a problem for members of the military because falling into persistent debt from taking out such loans could eventual ly affect their enlistment sta tus. Supporters of the practice said the lenders filled a vital need for those who needed short-term loans between pay days. Under the new law, those who charge above 60 percent annually could face as much as 20 years in prison and fines of $25,00(1 per transac tion. Individuals who have become victims due to fraud ulent loans also can file class action lawsuits instead of bringing charges against the company individually.
