PAGE 2A * FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS Thursday, April 15,2004 Academy gets accreditation By Antonia Hertwlg-Benson Staff Writer The Georgia Association of Christian Schools (GACS) has granted Covenant Christian Academy in Forsyth County a provisional accreditation status. The provisional accredita tion, which is good for two years, will open up many oppor tunities for the students includ ing eligibility for Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship. According to Johnathan Arnold, headmas ter, the accreditation also allows the seniors to be "more advanta geous” when applying for col lege out of state. The 22-year-old school moved to Forsyth from Dunwoody, where it was origi nally named Chalcedon Christian School. In 1998 when the school moved to Forsyth, it Inspectors offer directory The Georgia Association of Home Inspectors (GAHI) is offering its expertise to con sumers and is willing to pro vide a directory of qualified home inspectors at no cost. Jones Funeral Home in Alpharetta is in charge of the arrangements. Forsyth County News April 15, 2004 Edward O'dell Salyers Sr. Mr. Edward O'dell Salyers Sr., 62. of Cumming died April 12. 2004. Survivors include his wife. Mrs. Patricia Salyers; daughters, Sherri Feliciano, Nicole Salyers. Rae Salyers, all of Cumming; sons, Edward O'dell Salyers Jr. of Newport News, Va., Robert S. Thomas of Cumming; brother, Billy Wayne Salyers of Galveston, Texas; son-in law, David Feliciano of Cumming; daughters-in-law, Melissa Salyers of Newport News, Va., Anna Salyers of Cumming; sister-in-law, Bernice Garten of Cumming; five grandsons; two grand daughters; one great-grand daughter. A memorial service was at the family's home on Wednesday, April 14. Cremation Society of the South is in charge of the arrangements. For the past five years the school has been working with the Association of Christian Schools International to attain its accreditation. This is the first time the school has applied for accreditation. -Arnold said it actually took about three months to get approved through GACS. However, the accreditation is provisional, which means it’s good for just two years. Arnold said to receive full accreditation, which lasts for six years, the school must meet a few requirements which include producing a curriculum guide and a faculty handbook. However, Jones said if the eighth grade Georgia history course was missed by a high school transfer student it should not be focused on. “Why pick this one course out instead of algebra or English," said Jones. “It narrows down options for our local school board to determine in their curricu lums." The requirement for mid dle school instruction time was reduced to four and a half hours so that the sched ule of the students could allow for flexibility. The previous state RANGE from 1A relocated the range in late 2002 to another part of the quarry area due to a road exten sion of Market Place Parkway and additional mining activi ties. The new site was about half a mile from Windermere; other communities were located as close as 800 feet from the gun range. However, Paxton said safety precautions, including a 25-foot berm surrounding the site, were in place to prevent stray bullets. Even so, the sheriff said Tuesday there will be no more training exercises conducted at the Lafarge site due primari ly to the noise. "The complaints that we received about the noise have risen to the level to where we want to be a good neighbor.” said the sheriff. “I dare say we have ceased using that site as a firing range.” Deputies visited Mineo and told her the shooting would stop. Though it has been weeks since she has heard gunfire. Mineo said she is worried that target practice may resume at some point. “|The deputies] said the shooting would be ceased for the time being,” Mineo said. Paxton is serving his first term as the Forsyth County sheriff. Windermere resident Brant Meadows said he petitioned the sheriff for months to stop firing at the gun range to no avail. He said he became especially con cerned after learning the direc tion of the gunshots. One of those locations might be in the county’s old landfill off Old Federal Road in northwest Forsyth. Paxton said that site is being investi gated along federal and state School Councils also will be affected by the new legisla tion if approved by the gover nor. A membership term to the LSC is now staggered and the minimum allotment for meet ings is now four. Principals are no longer required to serve as the chairperson of the council. Knox said he felt there was an awareness of the need for local flexibility in educa tion at the legislative session.
