Even this Woods fan pulled for ‘Lefty’
I take a lot of grief from
my golfing buddies for being a
big Tiger Woods fan. But, I
don't think I’ve ever wanted a
putt to drop more than I did
for Phil Mickelson Sunday on
the 18th at Augusta. He
deserved to win and he did.
And the way he handled
the biggest victory of his
career was even more impres
sive. Who will ever forget
Mickelson going straight to
his wife and daughters to cele
brate? Hearing Lefty say to his
child “Daddy won. Can you
believe it?” was the stuff that
brings tears to your eyes. It
did mine. Could this be the
beginning of a Majors romp
for Mickelson?
Now that the monkey is off
his back, the confidence will
surely grow and he just might
begin to challenge Woods in
every category. Mickelson
made a lot of money at the
2(X)4 Masters. He also gained
a lot of new fans including
yours truly...

South girls overcome
Centennial, Eagles falter
After what coaches
dubbed a “rusty” first-half
performance, the South
Forsyth Lady War Eagle soc
cer team regrouped and pulled
out a 3-0 win at 5A
Centennial Tuesday night.
"1 was just glad to play a
game after spring break," said
South head coach Ken
Gilmore. "We played pretty
well, but we certainly left
room for improvement."
Marlyce Stein and
Shannon Agnew provided the
firepower for the Lady Eagles
(11-1-1, 6-0), who also rode
the keeping skills of Lauren
Thomas as she shut out

pitching as bad as it has
appeared in the first week of
the season? The jury is still
out.
The thing which really
puzzles me is that the top two
hurlers on the staff, Ortiz and
Hampton, have thrown recent
ly as like No. 4 and No. 5
starters. But, Horacio Ramirez
and Jaret Wright have been
more than impressive in their
first appearances.
The baseball season is very
long and these things always
seem to even out. Besides,
Paul Byrd should be available
before long and there’s always
the possibility of John Smoltz
returning to the rotation.
Don't laugh. If the Atlanta
team gets off to a miserable
start and the pitching is the
reason, Bobby Cox will have
Centennial with 12 saves on
the night.
“L.T. had a dozen or so
really good saves," noted
Gilmore of his senior net min
der.
Stein produced a stunning
strike for South, while Agnew
scored twice to give the Lady
Eagles a 3-0 advantage as
they came on strong in the
second half.
“In the second half we
really got better as a team,"
said Gilmore.
With just three games
remaining, the Lady Eagles
can now turn the attention
toward loftier goals: winning
6-AAAA. Should South win
out, the Lady Eagles will cap
ture the title, but stout tests
remain against Chamblee,
Marist and old foe Central.
“Record-wise I’m really
pleased with where we are
right now," said Gilmore. "I
didn’t expect to be 11-1-1.
But we can't get ahead of our
selves. There’s three really
to consider the move. It does
n’t matter who the closer is if
you don’t get the lead.
More troubling than the
pitching is the early rash of
injuries to star players. Rafael
Furcal, Chipper Jones and J.D,
Drew have already missed
time from the lineup.
This is the year Cox does
n’t have a strong enough unit
to win consistently without
two or three top players in the
batting order. This team lacks
power already and will be vir
tually toothless is Chipper and
Drew go on the DL...
The Atlanta Hawks are
playing well as a throw-away
2003-04 campaign draws to a
close. Is this group really pret
ty good or is the fast finish
simply a mirage? Don’t fall
for it. This team will be gutted
over the summer from the
head coach on down.
The Hawks can’t attract
fans by promoting the oppo
nent’s star player forever.
Winning meaningless games
is like picking up a birdie on
tough games ahead."
South's boys will also be
looking towards the postsea
son. but Centennial proved
just how tough that road
might be Tuesday night with a
7-0 win over the War Eagles
(11-2-1.5-0-1).
South opened strong, tak
ing the game to the Knights
for the first 20 minutes, but
Centennial struck three times
inside 10 minutes to turn the
game on its ear and grab con
trol of the contest.
“I'm definitely glad we
had a nonregion game coming
out of spring break,” said
South coach Matt Fiedler,
who hopes the outcome can
serve as a wake-up call head
ing into their stretch run of
three region games.

The Georgia G-Day game
is tomorrow and the spring
practice-ending affair might
draw the biggest crowd in its
history.
Most preseason publica
tions will have the Bulldogs
ranked in the top five next fall
and deservedly so. Are they
good enough to win the
National Championship? Time
will tell. Teams don’t have to
go undefeated anymore to
challenge for the title and
that’s good for the Dogs as
long as Florida is on the
schedule.

Bulldogs storm past
Cherokee
The finishing problems
that have dogged the Forsyth
Central Bulldog soccer team
this season finally dissipated
Tuesday night, in a 7-1 goal
fest over Cherokee County.
Ryan Whittington bagged
a hat trick, Bailey Slijvo
struck twice and Spencer
Williams and Raynoldo
Ramirez each scored once as
the Dawgs (7-6-1, 1-5)
cruised in their first game
back from spring break.
Central dominated the
game in midfield, with
Jonathan Wojociechowski and
Phillip Hughweiler displaying
excellent distribution into the
attack.
Meanwhile, the Dawgs
defense, behind solid play
from Kyle Wright and Ryan
Yackel held Cherokee in
check throughout.
Central travels to North
Forsyth tonight for a 7 p.m.
kickoff.
