Central tennis
sweeps Chestatee
The Forsyth Central tennis
teams took out Chestatee last
week, winning the girls matches
4-1 and the boys matches 3-2.
The Lady Dawgs (7-2 overall,
4-2 in Region 6-AAAA) would
have had a perfect sweep but had
to forfeit their No. 1 doubles
match after being forced to play
No. 3 singles player Melissa
Smith in the match.
But the default didn’t affect the
overall outcome, as all three sin
gles players won. No. 1 singles
Nerina Schoeman and No. 2 sin
gles player Brittany Romig each
won by identical 6-1,6-0 scores.
Smith also won 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, Central's No. 2
team of Jennifer Korb and Jane
Turpin won 6-2, 6-2.
For the Bulldogs (4-5, 2-4),
No. 1 singles player Justin Davis
continued his recent hot streak,
winning 3-6, 6-1,6-1. The victory
was his 12th in his last 13 match
es. Also, No. 3 singles player
Harry Pritchett won 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, the Dawgs’ No. 1
team of Tony Abdulkarim and
Kyle Rinna won what proved to
be the match-winning point, with
a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
The wins, followed a split non
region match against Sequoyah.
Against Sequoyah, the Lady
Dawgs won 5-0, while the
Bulldogs fell 4-1.

Forsyth’s Huxford falls
in match play semifinals
From staff reports
CARROLLTON After
making it to the final a year
ago, Forsyth County golfer
Patti Huxford had a strong per
formance in the 2004 Georgia
Women’s Match Play Cham
pionship before falling last
week to Lee Burton of New
nan.
Burton, in turn, fell to
defending champion Laura
Coble of Augusta, who claimed
her fourth-straight title last week
at Sunset Hills Country Club.
Coble played the front nine in
three-under par and held a 5-up
lead by the turn, before closing
out the match at 14.
Burton, who had drained a
40-footfr on 11 for birdie, failed
at Lanier dating back to 2003, said
despite his recent success his crew
is constantly searching for more
speed from his No. 45 Ford
Taurus.
“This was probably the best car
I’ve had all year,” said Buggay,
who made the winning move when
he passed Tony Bennett for the
lead on lap eight. "It was just awe
some.
“Coming off the corners, it was
real strong and didn’t slip much. It
had good forward bite.”
Rodney Benefield seized the
moment when Kevin Barrett and
Curt Britt crashed while battling
to capitalize on Coble’s only
bogey of the round when she
misread her five-foot comeback
putt for par at 12.
She went on to bogey 13 to
go back to five down. The two
halved 14 with pars to end the
match.
After taking the first hole
with birdie, Burton lost the lead
for good at three, four and five,
where she could do no better
than bogey.
This was the seventh playing
of the Georgia Women’s Match
Play Championship, which has
been held at Sunset Hills
Country Club all seven years.
Results from the other flights
included Cumming golfer Jackie
Sexton’s defeat of Bonnie
Grizzard, Rome, 5 and 4.

I’ll say one thing for these Dogs:
they’ve got fight.
So much so that in less than two
hours at Georgia’s annual spring
“G-Day” game, two melees erupted
that would have made Mike Tyson
proud.
And as long as they can keep
from killing each other that’s
probably a good
thing.
You’ve heard
the phrase ‘nice
guys finish last.’
Well, nice teams
don’t often win
championships.
That’s not to say
that this team is
made up of thugs
quite the
opposite but
consistent win-
ners in this game need a little mean
streak.
Offensive tackle Daniel Inman
certainly has it. The man who
guards David Greene’s blind side
was in the middle of both donny
brooks after provoking defensive
end Will Thompson.
Don't worry though, Inman
promises that it’s all in the spirit of
competition.
“It was a get-after-it day, man.’’
Inman said afterwards. “We were
fired up out there and getting after
it on both sides of the ball. ... We
walk off the field and everyone’s
friends and buddies. W'e go in the
locker room and joke around about
it.”
Yet it takes more than just grit
and fire to win a championship.
And now, that dreaded “hype"
word will be all over UGA this
summer and early fall Auburn
fans should remember the presea
son media build-up well.
Can the Dogs avoid the pitfalls
that sunk Auburn? It would seem
so. It takes four things to make up a
