"At Family Haven, we not only provide an immediate shelter for victims, but we also work diligently in the commu nity to prevent the violence from occurring,” said Baumann. Besides helping current victims, Family Haven is active in serving the commu nity with prevention plans. Baumann said she and her staff visit all of Forsyth County’s middle schools to speak to children about what domestic violence is and what to do if it is occurring in their home or to themselves. “Once I was speaking to a group of ninth-graders," remembered Baumann. “After the talk, a young man approached me and told me he did not know it was wrong that he hit his girlfriend he told me that in his house, when his father did not agree with his mother, the father would hit her so he grew up thinking that was natural.” Baumann stressed that despite certain societal myths, domestic violence knows no bounds or borders. In homes where domestic violence occurs, children are abused at a rate of 1,500 percent higher than the national average. Baumann said the growing epidemic knows no class lines either. She explained that women with a higher education and income level are often the hardest to reach. “Women that live in a more affluent setting are sometimes reluctant to face the abuse they are dealing with especially since the abuse may be emotion al instead of physical many times their spouse has threat ened them saying they will lose their house, car, and even their children if they seek help.” Baumann encouraged all persons who are experiencing domestic violence to at least seek counseling.
