TITLE from IB
South almost regained a
two-goal advantage moments
later, as Cushman gathered a
poor goal kick from Marist
and steamed into the visitor’s
penalty area only to fire ago
nizingly wide.
With the game opening
up, Marist finally struck to
even the contest at 2-2, just
19 minutes the end. This time
it was Marist pouncing on a
long throw in the South
penalty area to fire home
from close range.
With the result they need
ed in hand (Marist knew the
tie gave the region to them),
Marist pulled back and began
to play defensively. But South
couldn’t take advantage as the
clock ticked away.
"We controlled the tempo,
controlled the game." said a
disappointed Dolleh. “I con
sider this [lucky for] Marist."
Yet South can't afford to
dwell on the outcome for
long. The War Eagles must
either tie or defeat rivals
Central tonight at home if
they are to clinch the region’s
second seed and ensure a
home game in the first round
of the playoffs.
The War Eagles and Bull
dogs should kick-off around 8
p.m., at South Forsyth,
depending on the outcome of
the girls game.
Lady Eagles still
in title hunt
For the South Forsyth
Lady War Eagles, the key to
Tuesday night’s 2-0 loss is
simple: Forget it.
Despite the fact that the
Lady Eagles fell for the first
time in Region 6-AAAA to
Marist, South (12-2-1, 7-1)
still has an opportunity to win
the region title if they can
defeat arch-rival Central

Lady Dawgs ready
for playoffs
This is the time of year that
the Forsyth Central Lady
Bulldog soccer team has been
waiting for— playoff time.
"We’re ready for State,"
said Central head coach Sid
Bramblett after his team
picked up another region vic
tory Tuesday night at home,
defeating North Springs 4-1.
Central (12-1-2, 5-1-2)
grabbed an early lead as
Monica Tobin scored inside
the first five minutes, but, from
there, the Lady Dawgs’ play
turned sloppy, allowing the
Lady Spartans to equalize
before the half.
But Central came out
fired up after the interval,
getting two goals from Katie
Perea and one from Hannah
Woodhead to put North
Springs away.

tonight.
“We’ve still got a chance,”
said South head coach Ken
Gilmore. “So we have to play
well against Central.”
The Lady Dawgs, also
assured of a playoff spot, will
be looking to play spoiler and
only need a draw to keep
South from winning the top
seed. Marist, currently sitting
in first place with a region
record of 7-0-2 will take the
title unless South wins.
Yet South will have to
refocus after a physical game
against Marist, one in which
starting stopper Dana
Wierzbinski went down with
a leg injury and never
returned.
“She’s a big part of what
we do,” said Gilmore, who is
unsure whether he’ll have the
freshman back for tonight’s
contest.
Marist grabbed a 1-0 lead
in a first half marked by
chances for both sides.
South’s first open opportunity
came just 10 minutes in, but
Katie Lindsey headed over
the crossbar after a nice cross
from Gia Rankart.
But before the Lady
Eagles could try their luck
again. Marist took the lead
with 25 minutes left.
Breaking open down the right
flank, Marist crossed the ball
back to a wide-open attacker
in the South penalty area who
fired past a diving Lauren
Thomas.
After the strike, the game
reverted to a standoff, but
Lindsey nearly equalized for
the Lady Eagles with six min
utes left. Looking to chip the
Marist keeper, Lindsey served
up a 30-yard free kick only to
watch it pushed over the bar.
South continued to pound
awav in the second half, but
Now the Lady Dawgs are
but one game away from the
postseason, yet that one game
is against rivals South— a
contest between two playoff
bound squads.
“We’ve got to keep their
speed down, which I think we
can,” said Bramblett. “If we
pass well, we can play with
anyone, and we've been pass
ing the ball well lately."
Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
at South Forsyth.

South Forsyth’s Brooke Carpenter tangles with a Marist
opponent during South’s 2-0 loss Tuesday afternoon.
Marist took its 2-0 lead early
and held on down the stretch
as the Lady Eagles struggled
to find shots.
Marist scored the final
goal of the game with 30
minutes left after a corner
kick left Thomas stranded
Despite a fine save on
Marist's first effort, she
couldn't get to the rebound as
Marist extended their advan
tage.
“We knew they're good,”
ending the season without a
region win.
But head coach Jay
Glymph will have an experi
enced squad returning next
season after losing just
three seniors as the Raiders
(3-11-2, 0-8-1) prepare for a
changed Region 6-AAAA.
"This season was all about
gaining and experience and
learning,” said Glymph.
The Lady Raiders (8-8-2,
3-4-2) will also have an battle
tested group returning in 2005.
North’s girls finished out
their second 0-0 draw in a row
Tuesday night against Tucker.
Losing just two seniors,
Erik Moore’s Lady Raiders
said Gilmore. “And because
they challenge every ball, it
takes a lot of energy to play
them. You could see it at the
end; we were dragging a lit
tle.”
But now the Lady Eagles
must pick themselves up and
get ready for tonight, a con
test that promises an exciting
finish to the Region 6-AAAA
season.
Kickoff for the girls game
is at 6 p.m. at South Forsyth.

Bulldogs struggle in i
15-3 region loss
Forsyth Central’s woes con
tinued Wednesday night as the
Bulldogs fell to visiting
Riverwood 15-3.
Bulldog head coach J«ff
Heusing pulled no punches In
describing his squad’s biggest
problem right now.
“You can print in big, bold
letters: Confidence,” he said
following the game. “We just
don’t have it right now. Some
of us do, and that’s all right.
But it’s going to take all of our
guys ... going in the sarte
direction.”
Starting pitcher Breitt
Majors got the loss in six
innings of work. Riverwood
jumped out to an early 4-0 lead
in the top of the first inning
all on unearned runs.
“We can’t expect to win
ballgames when we’re giving
up five, six and seven errors,”
said Heusing.
But the Dawgs cut that
advantage in half, 4-2, in the
bottom of the inning on a twb
run Tyler Marzofka home run.
After Riverwood extended
its lead to a 6-2 margin in the
second, Central scored for the
last time in the third inning
senior Aaron McKevitt hitting
a double before scoring from
third on a Brandon Zim
merman sacrifice fly to center
field.
Relief pitcher Adam Swen
entered the game in the sev
enth inning, as Riverwood bat
ted around and each base run
ner scored for a nine-run
inning. Also for Forsyth
Central, Adam Baldwin was I
for-3 with a double, and Ret
Belt was l-for-3 with a walk.;
The Dawgs return to action
