PAGE 2B FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS Sunday, April 25, 2004 Josh Groban performs at Fox, Music Midtown in 11th Year On the town Entering its second decade. Music Midtown is not show ing any sign of aging. At last count, the three day line-up consists of 90-plus bands. Regardless of musical taste, the three day mega music festival is bound to offer plenty to please. Os course you won't miss the main headliners such as REO Speedwagon, The Steve Miller Band, The Smith ereens, George Clinton, or the Foo Fighters. There are oddities such as The Doors Os The 21st Century fronted by lan Astbury of the Cult, Journey featuring relatively new lead singer Steve Augeri, or former Black Crowe lead singer Chris Robinson's new band The New Earth Mud. There also all the food and gazebo shopping you could want. With so many bands, it is tempting to plan your week end down to the minute, but I also recommend wandering off your schedule now and then. The delights of Music Midtown are always in the fringes. That new band or stage that you wandered over to always turns out to be the best memory of the w eekend. Here are a few new acts you won't want to miss: Fountains Os Wayne fea tures pop that is full of won drous hooks and great melody. Their latest CD "Welcome Interstate Managers" features "Stacy's Mom" and I can’t wait to check them out live. Story Os The Year explodes w ith pure punk ener gy. Recently they owned Philips Arena with their acro batic performance and gave headliners Linkin' Park a run for their money. Switchfoot is a Christian group that really rocks. Their single "Meant to Live" is my favorite song of last year. Recently I had the pleasure of checking them out live at the Roxy, and on their DVD “Live from San Diego.” They are a definite can't miss. Joss Stone is a 16-year-old English vocalist with Norah Jones quality chops. Other bands you might want to fill in the gaps with are Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Drive-By Truckers, Tantric. Smile Empty Soul. Fuel, Galactic. The Strokes. Jason Mraz. and Ween. Tickets are a bargain for S4O for any single day or a three day pass for S 5 more. Plus. Courtney Love. And as always, don't for get to e-mail us your top Music Midtown moments. I WOULD BE REMISS IF I didn't mention three great shows last week. First off "popera" sensa tion Josh Groban put on a great show at the Fox on Tuesday. With a full orchestra, his golden vocals filled the com pletely packed theater beauti fully. It was easy to see how Groban is such a sensation across all demographics young and old. 1 can't think of anyone else that sings equally well in Italian. Spanish, or English, in the style of opera or pop. and at the same time has girls ages 16 to 60 in a tizzy. Highlights included “My Confession,” “The Rain Song." Don McLean's “Vincent" and his piano show case closer Paul Simon's “America.” His show was perfectly orchestrated and well rehearsed, and as a result he Fibromyalgia? He was at his best when bantering with the audience (that included his mom), and over time I hope he shakes it up even more. He is truly one of the best vocalists out there and 1 look forward to what's to come. The Crash Test Dummies proved that second chances can pay off at Smith’s Olde Bar last Monday night. In 1994, I saw the band at the peak of popularity at Lakewood Amphitheatre (now Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheatre) but their set was perfunctory at best. At Smith's Olde Bar. lead singer Brad Roberts was a completely different person. He was loose and fun. equal parts singer and story teller. With an unassuming man ner, the stories behind the songs are as interesting as the offbeat lyrics, not to mention that incredibly haunting voice. Smith's Olde Bar proved once again to be a great venue that breathed new life into a great act. The band has just released a new CD “Puss *n' Boots" and their playful style hasn't changed. I wouldn't count the Crash Test Dummies out just yet; they are one of the few bands out there that merit repeat viewing. I also want to give a shout out to opener Jim Bianco, who sounded great with Keb Mo' quality riffs and his CD "Well Within Reason" is worth checking out. Last, but not least. Black reveals how to get relief as fast as humanly pos sible without drugs, shots or surgery, call toll-.’ree 24-hour recorded message at 1-888-895-7484. Rebel Motorcycle Club at the Roxy last week was pure bona-fide rock 'n' roll. Playing cuts from their releases “Take Them On, On Your Own" and “8.R.M.C,” the night was full of power. While the set was a little short, just over an hour, they closed with my favorite "Love Burns." I believe we are just start ing to hear from BRMC and I believe they will break out soon. Opening for BRMC was a band called Rapture who was as close to the Cure as any band with a cowbell can get.
