Tips for cleaning your kitchen
By Debbie Wilburn
For the Forsyth County News
The ritual of spring clean
ing your kitchen is more than
producing shiny floors and
neatly arranged cupboards.
Spring is a great time to target
harmful bacteria that can lurk
on kitchen surfaces and even
in your refrigerator.
While you can’t see or
smell bacteria, they are every
where and they especially like
moist environments. A clean
and dry kitchen helps fight
bacteria and protect your and
your family from food borne
illness.
Spring cleaning tips you
should practice year-round to
make your food safer:
Always clean surfaces
thoroughly with hot. soapy
water. Sanitize your kitchen
countertops with diluted chlo
rine bleach or a disinfectant
kitchen cleaner.
Use one teaspoon bleach to
one quart of water. This solu
tion loses it's effectiveness
after 24 hours so make a small
quantity and change daily. Be
sure to dry with clean paper
towels after each cleaning.
Disinfect dishcloths often.
Launder dishcloths frequently,
using the hot water cycle of

the washing machine. Then,
be sure to dry them in the
dryer.
Clean your refrigerator
thoroughly to get rid of spills,
mold, mildew, and bacteria.
Throw away old foods and
condiments you will never
use. Also, do an inventory of
your freezer. Throw away old
foods or those with freezer
bum. If you haven’t eaten it in
a year discard most foods.
To tackle bacteria, mold
and mildew, clean interior
refrigerator and freezer (frost
free) surfaces with hot soapy
water.
Remove and wash drawers.
Do not use strong chemicals
inside your refrigerator. Rinse
with a damp cloth, dry with a
clean cloth. Manufacturers
recommend against using
chlorine bleach because it can
damage seals, gaskets and lin
ings.
Clean the outside of your
refrigerator with hot soapy
water, rinse and dry with
paper towels. If possible move
the refrigerator away from the
wall and vacuum the coils fol
lowing the owner’s manual
instructions. Your refrigerator
will work more efficiently.

Clean your kitchen sink
drain and disposal once or
twice a week by pouring a
solution of one teaspoon of
chlorine bleach in one quart of
water down the drain. Food
particles get trapped in the
drain creating the perfect envi
ronment for bacteria growth or
drain flies.
Go through your pantry
throw away old foods. High
fat foods such as shortening,
vegetable oils, and peanut but
ter should be discarded if they
smell rancid. Date your foods
as you purchase them using a
permanent marker.
Put fresher foods toward
the back. Donate non-perish

do not plan to use.
Clean the shelves with hot
soapy water rinse and dry. If
you see signs of insects call
the Extension office for more
information.
Finally, think of a spring
cleaning for your body. Drink
plenty of water, fat-free milk,
