Mr. George Steinbrenner, Owner The New York American League Baseball Club Yankee Stadium 161 st Street and River Avenue Bronx. NY 10451 Dear Big Stein, 1 know you must really be peeved at the dreadful play of your wonderful baseball team, but please do some thing completely out of character. Keep it to yourself. Don’t go on a rampage, firing coaches, shipping guys to Columbus, acquiring new players, or blasting Bud Selig for making the Yankees open the season in Japan. Most of all. don’t go ranting and raving in the media like you usually do. even though it's always good for a chuckle. Hey. it’s only April. Save the good stuff until you really need it. I know it was a bitter pill to swal low’, losing to the Red Sox. 2-0 on Sunday. Watching Pedro Martinez, he of the sore shoulder, baffle your multi million dollar lineup with a bunch of junk pitches. Wow, what a line: 7 innings pitched. 4 hits, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts. And 5 of those strikeouts were of the looking variety, which means your hitters were particularly bamboozled. And you had to watch your new big money starter. Javier Vazquez, hang an 0-2 curve ball to Manny Ramirez, who then deposited same over all those retired numbers in deep left field. But that wasn't the worst Sunday REGION from IB That’s one he’ll be telling his grand kids about.” St. Pius’ Randall Allen had a better tee shot and probably would have played more aggressively had Hocker laid up. "I think Steve put a lot of pressure on them. 1 think it was a good deci sion. 1 normally would say that’s a horrible decision.” Loveless said with a smile, adding, “but in that instance, it was a good decision. Very well done.” The War Eagles were led by Hocker's 72. along with Matt Goodall, 75; Joe Muntan. 77; Jack Jeffrey, 79; Colin Nadasdy. 84; and Chandler Deloach. 85. Finishing as runner-up by five strokes was St. Pius X at 308. just edging Marist at 309. Forsyth Central took fourth place with 318. The Bulldogs were led by Jimmy Schulte with a 78, followed by Rick Rider and Nick Sheffield, each shooting 79’s; Bobby Callahan, 82; David Bean. 87; and Michael Callahan. 87. "The elements were very, very tough to play in. but I thought we played well." said Central head coach Bruce Bennett. “We only have one senior, that’s Bobby Callahan. So. everybody else is going to be back, and 1 think the future looks very bright" While the players may be back, Monday's tournament marked Bennett’s final day as the team’s head coach. Following the event, the former Florida Gator was on his way to the Sunshine State to accept a high school Keep Your Eyes On The Future Pearle vision Express for details Glasses in One Hour IblWfih jl Most Cases _ Atlanta’s Best HSSKJ The Only Express Store n , Cole Vision in the Cumming Area Dr. James L. That had to be in the fifth inning, after Jorge Posada walked and Ruben Sierra doubled. You had to sit through Enrique Wilson (Geez! He used to hit Pedro in his sleep!) popping up, and Derek Jeter, your captain, looking at a third strike. And then what was that? The subway rumbling past the right field wall? Hardly. That was booing; faintly at first, then decisive, building to a crescendo as the 55,338 patrons final ly embraced their displeasure. And then, the sixth. Alex Rodriguez, the best player in the game, the guy you snatched right out from under the Red Sox’ clutches last winter, doubled. Surely, this was the rally. Sadly, Jason Giambi grounded out weakly, and Sheffield popped out. And then, another noise, barely audible, from the farthest reaches of the cavernous stadium, cautious at first, and then brazen: a chant of “Let's go Red Sox!” Yikes! 1 know all this is enough to make you feel compelled to axe somebody, but the thing to do right now is relax. Your team is tense enough without you tightening the screws. They know they've been awful. Jeter has now gone O-for-his-last -25. an incredible streak that has his head football coaching position. But, as for the honor of hosting the region tournament. Bennett couldn't have been happier or more apprecia tive. "You have to thank Mr. George Bagley and Lanier Golf Club.” he said. "They were very gracious to let us play here and they left the course in good shape. Everything was just out standing.” North Springs placed fifth at 335 and North Forsyth and Riverwood tied with a 347. "I'm proud of them,” said North Forsyth head coach Don Golden. "They did a good job." North Forsyth was led by Colby Wagoner with an 82. followed by Seth Holtzclaw, 86; Charley Hobgood. 89; Keith Ascenzo, 90; Andrew Grindle. 92; and Trey Page. 100. “Our guys all improved as the year went on," said Golden. “I think they enjoyed it. but they also got some experience in tournaments.” And with that tournament experi ence. Golden said, comes the realiza tion of how good the competition is. “We’ve got some young guys who didn’t play today who are coming on," he said. “They’re going to be good golfers for us.” Also Monday, Dunwoody finished the afternoon with a 386. followed by Tucker at 413. Chamblee did not reg ister a scorecard. While the Marist (181) and Forsyth Central girls (193) took first and second, respectively, the South Forsyth girls finished in third place with a 201. The Lady Eagles were led batting average hovering at a micro scopic .175. Alas, that’s better than Bernie Williams, bouncing around the batting order at .176. Giambi, still bat ting cleanup, at least clears the Mendoza line, ala lusty .204. Sheffield checks in at .265. And Mr. A-Rod, who got one lone ly single in his final at bat in last weekend’s four game set in Boston, actually homered Saturday, and gar nered two hits Sunday. So he’s all the way up to .257. See, patience, patience. Now, your bench hasn't been much better. Poor Joe Torre’s first option Sunday was Travis Lee, who’s hitting a robust .105. But, really, do you think this lineup is going to hit .217 and score four pal try runs a game all year? Os course not. Os course, if you’re scoring four runs a game, you’d better have a team earned run average of less than 4.50. It looks like your rotation is trying to make up for the loss of Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens in every start. Kevin Brown is 3-0 (2.12 ERA), but he can’t beat Boston. Vazquez is only 2-2, but with a 2.63 ERA. Odds are, Mike Mussina (1-4, 6.67) and Jose Contreras (0-2, 10.64) will start earn ing their megabucks. Again, remember, it’s only April! You paid $lB3 million for these guys for a reason, and it's not to beat Boston in April. It’s to beat Boston in October. Still, I know how irksome it is to lose to your most hated, fiercest arch rival six times out of seven. Yes, it’s Photo Travis M. Chaffin North Forsyth golfer Keith Ascenzo is seen in action at Monday’s Region 6-AAAA tournament at Lanier Golf Club in Cumming. by Michelle Carter with a 100, Karly Zapp at 101. and Megan Rainey with a 110. "They knew they could play better and I think they were disappointed ... but it was a good experience for them." said Lady Eagles coach Teresa Moore. The South Forsyth coach was encouraged by the play all season long by the team's No. I golfer. Zapp. who is only a freshman. “We've got big expectations for her." said Moore. “That was a good experience for her." And in 2005, South Forsyth will have five girls returning who played, but didn't necessarily start in one of the top three spots. “1 think next year, we re going to be right up there." said Moore. only April, but that’s already over one third of your season’s series with the Sox shot. $lB3 million for one win? Not the best investment, really. Worst of all, your club has given the Red Sox life. They’ve bounced back from that crushing defeat in Game 7 of the ALCS with a sweep at Yankee Stadium, and that hasn’t hap pened since September 1999 23 series ago! And that’s only Boston’s fifth sweep in New York since September 1968. Just listen to Sox center fielder Johnny Damon’s take on the latest proceedings: “We feel like we’re going to win every day. We know they're a good team, and can bounce back. But we also know we can keep it rolling, too.” Keep in mind what your estranged General Manager, Brian Cashman, had to say over the weekend as well: “The bottom line is, we want to win every game, regardless of who it is. They all count, but there is a lot of highway ahead." Exactly. Remember two years ago? On May 9, 2002, the Yankees trailed the Sox by five games. They wound up winning the division by ten and a half. No sweat. So. stay cool. Big Stein. It’s only April. You’ve got the best team money can buy. Don't change a thing. And don’t panic. Yet. When not practicing his avocation, Denton Ashway practices his vocation with the law firm of Ashway and Haldi in Cumming. Riverwood shot a 206, followed by St. Pius X with 217. The North Forsyth Lady Raiders finished the day at 259, as A. Foster shot at 127, and M. Echols has a 136. North Springs reported no score. Despite early morning showers Monday that delayed the start of the tournament by an hour, the clouds finally parted and the sun broke through as the final scorecards were being tallied. Lady Dawgs coach Anderson said it was an honor for his program to host Region 6-AAAA, adding that he received positive feedback from those in attendance. “I’ve had several coaches ask if we could host it again." he said. “We’ve been very impressed with [Lanier Golf Club’s) facilities and the people."
