Marlins know Braves still in the hunt By Linda Robertson Knight Ridder Newspapers/KRT MIAMI The longest streak of championships in U.S. professional team sports history is supposed to end this season. The Atlanta Braves, once so rich in talent, are now the low-budget version of their formerly glorious roster. The “tomahawk chop" has become a pantomime for cut, cut, cut. The franchise slashed its payroll by sls million. Gone: Greg Maddux, who held the team record for lowest ERA (2.63) and highest winning percentage (.688). Gone: Javier Lopez, Gary Sheffield and Vinny Castilla, who com bined for 104 home runs and 317 RBI last year. But don't tell the Marlins about the dying dynasty in Atlanta. The Marlins continue to be bedeviled by this team, as they were again Sunday 7- 2. After being swept by the Braves last week at Turner Field, the Marlins lost the series at home 2-1.
