Fire chief announces creation of TRT
The Forsyth County Fire
Department has begun the
process of receiving the equip
ment necessary to support the
efforts of its newly formed
"Technical Rescue Team"
(TRT). The TRT will be highly
trained in the disciplines of
"trench rescue/recovery,"
high-angle rescue, confined
space rescue, and swift water
rescue. All support equipment
and training will be in place
this summer.
Trench Rescue/Recovery is
initiated whenever there is a
cave-in onto a worker
deployed into a trench or
ditch. It is estimated that 90
percent of all such efforts are
recovery of the victim, as
opposed to a rescue.
Upon the arrival of the TRT
team, the situation must be
carefully analyzed before
deploying members of the team
into the rescue/recovery mode
below the surface. Massive
pieces of lumber (brought to
the scene by the fire depart
ment) are used to shore up the
Water treatment plant
hosts open house
The Forsyth County Water & Sewer Department in association
with Operations Management International is hosting an open house
at the Water Treatment Facility located on Antioc Road.
The open house is being held in recognition of National
Drinking Water Week.
All across Drinking Water Week brings attention to
one of our most precious natural resources.
A cool drink on a hot day —a crisp, green salad at dinner in
everything you eat or drink, water makes it work.
Is conservation your "cup of tea"? Then, celebrate Drinking
Water Week!
The hours of the open house will be from noon to 5 p.m. on
Friday, May 7. Refreshments and finger foods will be provided
along with hourly tours of the facility.

Randy Payne, complex
environmental manager for
Tyson Foods, reported that his
group of volunteers cleaned up
more than 26 bags of litter off
Forsyth County streets recent
ly.
"This was a great team
building exercise for us, and
everyone was very happy with
their mugs and sandwich

of accomplishment." he said

sides of the trench to prevent a
secondary collapse. This is the
reason a 100-foot perimeter is
established around the collapse
site, as even the vibration of the
fire engine can cause the sec
ondary collapse.
Should stress cracks be
noted to form on the ground in
the rescue/recovery area, the
"safe zone" is widened to 500
feet. Once the shoring is in
place, air-monitoring devices
are lowered into the trench to
assure that the air quality will
support the rescuers going
below the surface. Then comes
the brutal, "back-breaking”
work of removing the dirt from
around the victim one. 5-gallon
bucket at a time. One cubic foot
of dirt weighs 140 pounds
(more if the dirt is wet.)
Because of the sheer physical
exertion put forth by the fire
fighters. it is standard operating
procedure to request another
TRT from a surrounding coun
ty to assist in the efforts of vic
tim recovery.

aspect of the TRT comes into
play whenever there is a victim
needing rescue from a cliff
(such as Sawnee Mountain), a
window washer trapped on the
side of a building, an injury or
medical emergency atop a tall
billboard or communications
(cell) tower. This discipline is
known as rope rescue.
Confined Space Rescue
involves an entrapment of a cit
izen in what is commonly
known as a manhole. Upon
arrival of the fire department,
there will be a careful monitor
ing of the air quality under the
surface. There is the ever-pres
ent danger of a methane explo
sion (especially if the manhole
is near a lake or pond) and elec
trocution, should the firefighter
come into contact with electri
cal wires in the manhole.
The Swift Water Rescue
discipline involves highly
trained firefighters entering the
fast moving current of the
Chattahoochee River or sur
rounding rivers for rescue.
