While Forsyth Central
will not be represented at
State this year, the team’s
coaches believe that one key
component to a successful
2004-05 is getting more stu¬
dents involved in the pro¬
gram.
“We’ve need to get some
more runners [to tryout for
the team],” said Bulldog
coach Alan Slaughter.
» We’ve got some fast kids at
the school, but they just don’t
want to come out and run.
And Central coach Carl
Lyles feels the experience
gained this season will be a
big plus for the Bulldogs
returning next year.
I think coming to this
meet was a big wakeup call
for a lot of the runners,” said
Lyles, “because a few of
them were used to winning
and, once they got here, it
was a whole different level.
The competition was greater
than what they were used to. H

FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS — Wednesday, May 5, 2004
Bannister’s feat well worth remembering
“I never tire of coming
here,” observed Roger
Bannister last week as he vis¬
ited the Iffley Road Track in
Oxford, England. “It all
comes back to me so vivid
iy.
Fifty years ago Thursday,
on May 6, 1954, Bannister
circled that track four times
during his run to immortality,
becoming the first man to
break four minutes in the
mile.
One of those rare events
that transcends the sports
world, Bannister’s 3:59.4
mark was likened to
Lindbergh’s crossing, or a
lunar landing. It remains one
of the greatest athletic feats
of the 20th century.
The mile record of
Sweden’s Gunter Haegg,
4:01.4, had stood since 1945.
Nine years later, many
it experts” had become con¬
vinced that a four minute
mile was a physical impossi¬
bility.
Such neanderthal thinking
reminds us what a different
world we lived in just 50
years ago and how naive the
sports world was, not yet
influenced by television and
the big money it fostered,
agents, or performance
enhancing drugs.
Amateurism lived.
How different things are
today. “This is about money,
says Allen Johnson, one of
the world’s best 110-meter
hurdlers over the past dozen
years. He won the gold medal
in Atlanta, four world cham¬
pionships, and holds the
American record at 12.92.
If you can be a tenth of a
second faster, it might be the
difference between $60,000
and $ 1.5 million a year,” says
Johnson. “The stakes have
gone up, and the drug tech¬
nology has gone up with it.
Johnson, it should be noted,
has been tested over 15 times
for drugs without a single
positive.
Back in Bannister’s day,
there was a strict rule: ath-

letes never accepted anything
worth more than $20.
Bannister once turned down a
valuable silver trophy
because “it just wasn’t done.
And drugs? No way.
Bannister never heard of run¬
ners using stimulants.
Truth be told, Bannister
was a true student-athlete.
When he broke the barrier,
Bannister was a 25-year-old
medical student. The morn¬
ing of the record run, he
sharpened his spikes on the
grindstone in the lab at St.
Mary’s hospital in London,
then took the train to Oxford.
And while chasing the
record, Bannister seldom
trained more than 35 minutes
a day. Today’s athletes can’t
even get warmed up and
stretched out in that much
time.
Perhaps it was easier to be
principled back than, when
setting a world record didn’t
create a cash cow. But
Bannister has remained true
to his principles throughout
the years.
“To me, one of the most
amazing things about Roger
is that he never cashed in on
his achievements,” said Neal
Bascomb, author of “The
Perfect Mile.
“He could easily be doing
commercials. He could be
making money off the 50th
anniversary. But the most he
ever did was write his book.”
That book, his autobiogra¬
phy entitled “The First Four
Minutes,” describes
Bannister’s feeling halfway
through his final lap. “I felt,
at that moment, it was my
chance to do one thing
supremely well.
It almost didn't come off.
The day dawned rainy and
windy, not ideal conditions

who would pace him through
the race.
Shortly before race time,
the rain had stopped, and
Bannister noticed the wind
had died as well, by looking
at the flags on St. George’s
church. “It fluttered more
gently now, and the scene
from Shaw’s ‘Saint Joan’
Bashed through my mind,
how she, at her desperate

today’s athletes musing over

Brasher took the field

Bannister then defeated
Landy in Vancouver on Aug.

two men broke four minutes.
Then, Bannister retired
from racing, became a distin¬

master of Pembroke College.
For 10 years, my reputa¬

progress in my medical
career,” Bannister recalls.
l The skills for each are so
