In the second stage of the
poisoning, 12 to 24 hours after
ingestion, ethylene glycol caus¬
es intoxication similar to the
effects of alcohol, Cobb District
Attorney Pat Head said in open¬
ing statements. Glenn Turner
was alert during his hospital
visit. Freeman said. A quick¬
ened heartbeat also is notice¬
able in the second
stages of poison¬
ing. Glenn Turner
did exhibit this
symptom, as noted
in the hospital
records.
One to three
days after ethylene
glycol ingestion,

When cross examined by
defense attorney Jimmy Berry,
Freeman said laboratory testing
is the only way to clearly diag¬
nose kidney failure. Freeman
hud no reason to suspect Glenn
Turner’s kidneys had malfunc¬
tioned. he added. “I wish 1 had
had the time, retrospectively,
for some lab screens,” Freeman
said on the witness stand.
Medical researchers are
familiar with the consequences
of large doses of ethylene gly¬
col. However, there is little
knowledge regarding poisoning
by small doses of ethylene gly¬
col, Freeman said. Using his
medical experience. Freeman
speculated that the symptoms
of a slow poisoning would be
consistent with those of Glenn
Turner in the few days preced¬
ing his death. “As a clinician, I

band in small doses.
After establishing the physi¬
cal state of Glenn Turner the
day prior to his death, the state
delved into evidence at the
scene of the death. Sgt. Tim
Brooks with the Cobb County
Police Department responded
to Lynn Turner’s 911 call when
she found her husband dead.
Brooks used photographs of the
Turner residence and the body
to retrace his steps that after¬
noon for the jury.
Upon arrival at the scene,
Brooks met Lynn Turner. She
was crying and directed him to
the back bedroom, where her
husband lay dead in his bed.
Brooks said the room was very
dark upon his entrance. After
the light switch did not turn on
the ceiling light, a firefighter
ripped open the blinds on the
bedroom window. The jury was
presented with a photograph of
the tom blinds.
This evidence pointing to a
dark room is key to the prose¬
cution. An earlier witness,
Becky Halter of Dallas, testified
Monday that Lynn Turner said
her husband’s face was purple
when she found him dead.
Turner reportedly made that
comment
Glenn Turner’s death
during a phone con¬
versation with Halter.
When Brooks
questioned Lynn
Turner at the scene of
the death, she said
Glenn Turner awoke
during the night, went
downstairs to the base¬
ment and tried to drink gaso¬
line. However, Lynn Turner ear¬
lier told Brooks that she and her
mother, Helen Gregory of
Cumming, assisted Glenn
Turner in and out of bed after
his hospital visit.
“Since Glenn was so sick,
how did he get downstairs and
how did she get him back
upstairs?” Brooks said he asked
Lynn Turner that day.
Brooks never received an
answer to that question, and
neither has the jury at this point
in the trial. Defense attorney
Vic Reynolds also left the jury
to wonder why Cobb detectives
did not check the basement for
evidence that Glenn Turner
tried to drink gasoline. Police
officers only entered the base¬
ment to retrieve Glenn Turner’s
police motorcycle, Brooks testi¬
fied.
