Nothing weighing on Bonds’ mind
By Jack O’Connell
The Hartford Courant/KRT
NEW YORK Barry
Bonds was chatting more or
less amiably for nearly half
an hour before the subject of
the infamous BALCO investi¬
gation was broached. One of
the scores of reporters encir¬
cling Bonds Tuesday at Shea
Stadium asked whether he
was affected by a probe that
has targeted, among others,
his personal trainer and boy¬
hood chum, Greg Anderson.
"Does it look like it?”
Bonds said. “It doesn’t faze
me at all.”
Judging from the stat
sheet. Bonds is oblivious to
the controversy surrounding
the use of anabolic steroids
by professional athletes. He
is batting .463 with a .704 on
base average and a 1.11 slug¬
ging percentage, an astonish¬
ing collection of numbers
considering the man compil¬
ing them will turn 40 in two
months.
Referring to another 40
year-old, “Roger Clemens has
five wins, and that’s good, -*
said Bonds, held out of the
Giants lineup against the
Mets because of a sinus
infection. “Guys take care of
themselves a lot better now
than they used to.”
Opponents are so adamant
not to let Bonds assault them
that half of his 44 walks have
been intentional. When Roger
Maris hit 61 home runs in
1961, a record that stood for
37 years, he was not walked
purposely once. Of course, he
had Mickey Mantle batting
behind him.
“There ain’t no one in the
RALLY from IB
away for a six-run inning and a 16-12
lead that would not be relinquished.
Offensively for South Forsyth, Jamie
Benjamin was 4-for-5; Tom Morris was
a home run shy of hitting for the cycle,
with two singles, a ground-rule double,
a triple and 2 RBIs and two runs
(including one which tied the game at

Boastful, yes, but Bonds
has pretty much backed up
his big talk. He recently
passed Willie Mays on the
career home run list with only
Henry Aaron (755) and Babe
Ruth (714) ahead of him.
Bonds has broken Mark
McGwire’s season home run
record, Ruth's season records
for walks and slugging per¬
centage and is on a path to
shatter Rickey Henderson’s
career mark for walks. Even
Ted Williams’ distinction of
being the last .400 hitter in
the majors could be in jeop¬
ardy, although Bonds does
not think he can hit .400 over
a full season.
“It’s May,” he said. “I
don't think anybody is good
enough to hit .400 into
October, not even me. I’ve
never seen it done. n
Yet since Bonds walks so
frequently, he might not need
that many hits to bat .400.
But to Bonds, walks are his
enemy toward any accom¬
plishment.
“Walks, he said, I’m
sick of these walks. How can
you hit .400 today when they
changed pitchers all the time
and walk you whenever they
want to. You won’t see any¬
body break [Joe DiMaggio’s]
56-game hitting steak, either.
As naked as Bonds is in
the Giants batting order, he is
also suffering exposure by
innuendo in the BALCO case.

cheering for their slugging
left fielder. Bonds was among
the major league players who
testified before a grand jury.
He has denied taking steroids.
“Ain’t nobody investigat¬
ing me,” Bonds said.
Bonds is not one of four
men charged with distributing
anabolic steroids and THG
and money laundering, but
Bonds is too close to one of
them for comfort.
He defends his relation¬
ship with Anderson by say¬
ing, “I have a brother who is

Reports continue to break
in publications about the
investigation.
Newsday reported that the
government has acquired the
results of testing for steroids
last year as pa# of the labor
agreement between Major
League Baseball and the
Major League Players
Association.
Bonds lifted his shirt and
exposed a midsection that
one would not consider “cut.
“Look at,,these abs,” he
said. “Where are the 30
pounds of muscle you guys
talk about?”
As region champion, South Forsyth
is scheduled to host the No. 4 team
from Region 5 (which has not been
