Bill Hayes, counsel for “B.B Wolf”, makes a point during
a mock trial at the courthouse on Wednesday morning.
Order in the court:
Pig takes on wolf
By Nancy Smallwood
Associate Editor
It was the constant harass¬
ment that drove Curly Pig to
commit attempted murder,
according to the public
defender from Midway
Elementary School on
Wednesday.
Fifth-graders from the
school were invited by
Superior Court Judge Jeffrey
Bagley to participate in a
mock trial of the “State versus
Curly Pig.” The trial is part of
the judge’s Partner In
Education Program in which
once a month he discusses law
with the students.
After being briefed by the
judge on the case all the fifth
graders either played parts in
the trial or acted as the jury.
“Pay close attention to the
evidence,” warned Judge
Bagley. “Listen closely and
decide for yourself the inno¬
cence or guilt.”
The fictional case involves
Curly Pig, who has been
arrested for trying to kill B.B.
Wolf by boiling him in a caul¬
dron. B.B. Wolf forcibly
entered Curly Pig’s home and
is suspected of killing Curly’s
brothers, Larry Pig and Moe
Pig.
While the story is fictional,
the law in the case is very real
and the entire process is relat¬
ed to an actual court trial.
Judge Bagley and fifth-grade
teachers prepare students by
instructing them on the judi
cial process and American
government weeks before the
trial occurs.
After a jury of wolves and
pigs hear opening arguments,
the prosecuting attorney
describes how a steaming
cauldron was the fate awaiting
poor B.B. Wolf when he tried
to awaken his pig friend in a
brick home. Wolf is called to
the stand and is questioned by

both attorneys.
“I was just admiring his
well built home,” said B.B.
Wolf. “I called out his name,
just wanting to see my old
buddy. When he didn’t answer,
I thought he was asleep and
wanted to get into the house to
wake him up.”
However, when the district
attorney calls Curly Pig to the
stand it is another story.
“Mr. Wolf had it in for the
Pig family. He blew down the
brothers’ houses and when he
couldn’t blow down Curly’s he
began harassing him. Mr. Pig
was egged on,” said the attor¬
ney.
Damaging evidence is
given when the defense attor¬
ney mentions a cookbook
located at the scene of the
crime that was found opened
to a “Poached Wolf’ recipe.
The lid to the cauldron was
also removed by someone in
preparation for the fall of Mr.
Wolf down the chimney.
Both attorneys give closing
arguments and then the jury
was sent off to decide Mr.
Pig’s fate.
“It was a lot of fun,” said
Josh Bar bi r , who played B .B.
Wolf . j ike d standing up and
speaking to the jury.”
Curly Pig, played by
Rebecca Whitted, said her
favorite part was the actuhl
trial and acting.
“I knew about the law from
studying before," she said,
The students’ education is
not over when the trial con
eludes. Judge Bagley must
then decide the sentence of
Mr. Pig, who was found guilty.
‘Ladies and gentlemen of
the jury you have done your
duty and found Mr. Curly Pig
guilty of attempted murder,
Since it worked out OK and
Mr. Wolf is still here with us, I
sentence him to 10 years serv
ice and probation,” said
Bagley.
Stone back in full voice for Lanierland show
By Harris Blackwood

“It was like being a magi¬
cian with broken fingers.”
That’s how entertainer
Doug Stone described his
bout with an ailment that
robbed the singer of his most
important asset, his singing
voice.
“I’ve had a little vocal
trouble,” said Stone, speaking
from his home in Tennessee.
“Unfortunately, it lasted
about seven years.”
Stone, a native Georgian,
will share the stage Saturday
night with another Peach
State product, T. Graham
Brown, in a concert at
Lanierland Music Park.
Joining them will be leg¬
endary country crooner Ray
Price.
Stone used to claim
Newnan as his hometown, as
did country singer Alan
Jackson.
