Daughter’s night terrors may be more than just bad dreams
DEAR ABBY: I have never written you
from the woman who said her 11
year-old daughter “sometimes gets
scared at night and thinks she hears
voices and someone walking near
her room,” I had to write. When my
younger sister was her age, she,
too, would get scared at night and
hear people walking/talking outside
her room when there weren’t. It
became so bad she could hardly get
to at
Our mother took'her to the doctor to be
examined, and he discovered that her thy¬
roid gland was severely overactive. Once
her thyroid hormone was returned to normal
levels (not a quick or easy process), her hal¬
lucinations stopped and have not returned.
We were lucky she was diagnosed before
she suffered any long-term effects. Please
urge that mother to have her daughter evalu¬
ated by a medical professional ASAP to rule
out any physical or psychological causes.
— R.N. IN OKLAHOMA
DEAR R.N.: I agree that if the girl’s symp¬
toms persist she should be evaluated by a
doctor, but not necessarily for the reason
you stated. Several readers wrote to point
out that the girl, whose father was fanning
her fears, may be being molested by him:

DEAR ABBY: For three years straight, the
“technique” described by the mother of that
young girl was identical to the concealment
of incest perpetrated by my former husband.
Such behavior is the last thing a wife or
mother ever suspects, even when she should.
I was lucky; I walked in on it. I agree that
the writer’s husband is playing a mind game
with his wife and daughter.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY
(June 23). You love it when
a plan comes together —
and this year features many
such triumphant plans. Get
yourself a notebook to spin
your ideas into. As if by
magic, you create what you
write about. Beginner’s
luck accompanies summer¬
time endeavors.
Earthshattering love is fea¬
tured now and in
September. Virgo and
Pisces are so compatible.
Your lucky numbers are:
20, 4, 11,26 and 23.
ARIES (March 21-Aprii
19) . Being inventive is
great, but do your research,
too, or you’ll waste time.
On the social front, first
impressions are telling, but
they don’t impart the whole
story.
TAURUS (April 20-May
20) . Be a student of human
behavior — you’ll find it
endlessly fascinating and
you’ll learn something
about a relationship that’s
very important to you.
Notice what others do, not
what they say.

arms, placed her back in bed and
remained with her for the rest of the night
— while checking on the other girls and my
husband’s whereabouts.
There may, indeed, be a nighttime
intruder, Abby — the husband. Such men, if
the child is awake enough, will not hesitate
to threaten to kill the mother if the child
“tells.” Same old script, not much variation.
— WISER NOW IN HAWAII
DEAR WISER NOW: Your letter is chill¬
ing. Thank you for sharing your experience.
DEAR ABBY: Please tell that woman if her
husband insists on scaring her by implying
there might be an intruder in the house, to
ask him once to do a walk-through to see if
the house is secure. If he refuses and says
he’s going to sleep, tell him OK — that
you’ll just call the police and tell them your
husband said there might be an intruder on
the premises and ask them to go through
the house.
I guarantee the first time she has to do
it, it will be the last time he pulls that stunt.
What he’s doing is a power play. He ’s try¬
ing to control them. But if she takes the ball
out of his court, then he won’t be able to
play.

Horoscopes by Holiday
GEMINI (May 21-June
21) . Someone exciting pops
into the scene, rearranges
everything and then exits
just as quickly. Be open to
going on the ride, since
resistance is futile. Besides,
a pattern-interrupt might be
just what is needed.
CANCER (June 22-July
22) . You’ll be the one with
the fabulous attitude when
things go awry, which they
will. Being a sport adds to
your charisma. If you don’t
have a favorite charity,
today is the perfect day to
name one — a lucky move.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22).
Don’t worry about how to
show someone you love
him/her. When you truly
love, it already shows. You
can’t help it. It’s evident in
everything you do, includ¬
ing speaking this person’s
name.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept.
22). New responsibilities
will be rewarding — even¬
tually. Have faith. When a
plan falls apart, just be glad
that it happened in the
planning stage, when you
can still do something
about it!
LIBRA (Sept. 23-OcL 23).
Wishing is tricky business.
There’s an important differ¬
ence between envisioning
your “someday” from a
place of happy fulfillment
and wistfully longing for a
different life. The former
gets results that the latter
can’t achieve.

lifting our 12-year-old from her
bed while touching her inappro¬
priately.
My daughter was whimper¬

was apparently talking to him¬

I wordlessly lifted her from
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov.
21). Taking on a special proj¬
ect will help you embrace
what you have the power to
change and let go of worries
about circumstances beyond
your control.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22
Dec. 21). There’s something
delicious about what’s just
out of reach. Though you’re
ambitious, don’t push for¬
ward when there are red flag
warnings waving in front of
you! Pisces helps you pay
attention to your intuition.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22
Jan. 19). An overload affects
your power grid. New ways
to relax are needed, as your
mind is jolted out of normal
thought patterns when you
experience something novel.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
18). Crazy, glamorous
friends exert an influence
over you. You’re not one to
be a follower, but if someone
has a formula for success,
why not use it? It takes more
than natural talent to win at
this game.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March
20). Be wiser than the leg¬
endary fool who rubbed the
genie bottle and squandered
his three wishes. Be thought¬
ful about the questions you
are asking. The right answer
only comes when the right
question is asked.
