Cold Stone voted 15 franchise in

DAWSONVILLE — Move
over hot cocoa. An unlikely
winter treat is moving in.
According to Sonny Patel,
owner of Cold Stone
Creamery which opened for
business Nov. 12, more ice
cream is consumed during the
winter months than when the
temperature is hot outside.
January is the month that
the most ice cream is sold,” he
said. “Curling up in front of
the fireplace with a delicious
bowl of ice cream is so nice.
Cold Stone Creamery, a
rising American company
which has enjoyed double¬
digit growth in new store aver¬
age volume in each of the past
four years and was ranked No.
12 in Entrepreneur magazine’s
Fastest Growing Franchises in
America earlier this year, was
the Patel’s first choice when
they considered opening a
small business. “It’s ice
cream,” Patel said. “We love
ice cream. 99
And how could they not
love Cold Stone Creamery’s
special blend of the treat,
made fresh every morning
with only the finest ingredi¬
ents and served in freshly
ironed waffle cones.
Cold Stone Creamery
founders Donald and Susan
Sutherland also had a passion
for ice cream. They searched
everywhere for ice cream that
was “smooth and creamy,”
rather than the traditional
hard-packed or soft-serve vari¬
eties. In 1988, after coming
up empty in their search, they
opened the first Cold Stone
Creamery in Tempe, Ariz.
Using only premium ingre¬
dients, the Sutherlands pro¬
duced the highest quality ice
cream available — making it
fresh each day in their store.
Every ice cream creation was
then made to order for each
customer by blending in mix
ins on a frozen granite stone
(the Cold Stone), and served
in a fresh-baked waffle cone.
Word soon spread far and
wide among ice cream lovers
that Cold Stone Creamery’s
ice cream was the best, and
the revolution began. In 1995,
the first franchise store opened
in Tucson, Arizona, followed
by the first out-of-state store
in Camarillo, Calif.
There are now more than
1,100 Cold Stone Creamery’s
and another 1,000 have been
approved, taking the restau-

The Dawsonville store is
the first Cold Stone Creamery
in the area. The choice to open
in Dawsonville was never a
question.
When we moved to
Forsyth 10 years ago, there
was nothing,” Patel said.
Now look at it. Dawsonville
will be that way soon. It’s
already happening. We defi-

While Sonny runs the
restaurant, the franchise is
actually owned by his brother
and sister-in-law, Mike and
Rimple Patel. Mike, a pharma¬
cist who isn’t even an ice
cream fan, saw the potential in
opening the creamery in
Dawsonville. “This store is
really for them (Sonny and
Rimple). They love ice
cream. »»

Justin Burgess, a first-grader
at Blackburn Elementary,
was one of Cold Stone
Creamery’s first customers.
While Justin had over 35 fla¬
vors to choose from, he
decided vanilla would be his
favorite. “It’s real good ice,” he
said.
