Cathy Whitworth named
Forsyth County Family
YMCA volunteer of the year
From Staff Reports
The Forsyth County Family YMCA
announced Cathy Whitworth as its 2005 vol¬
unteer of the year. Whitworth came to the
Forsyth County Family YMCA as a temporary
clerical employee, but stayed to volunteer with
Y programs. She registers participants for soc¬
cer and summer day camp, mails program
information, and helps with general office
duties.
Whenever Cathy has free time, she calls
the Y to ask if there is anything going on and
offers her assistance. She goes above and
beyond any expectations we could ever have of
a volunteer,” said Kevin Thompson, executive
director of die Forsyth County Family YMCA.
Whitworth enjoys working with the staff
and program members, the pleasant and posi¬
tive environment and the new friendships at the
Y. And, she eagerly awaits the opening of the
new facility in February.
Whitworth believes in what the Y stands
for and particularly appreciates the emphasis
on positive actions and attitude, team work and

It’s been many hours of plan¬
ning and a little over a year of
construction but the long await¬
ed opening of Forsyth County’s
first YMCA facility is almost
here.
Executive Director Kevin
Thompson and staff already are
accepting membership applica¬
tions for the 56,500-square-foot
facility just off of Post Road in
the Vickery community. While
the official opening date for the
YMCA will be Feb. 11, 2006,
many in the community are tak¬
ing advantage of (he membership
program that allows individuals
or families to utilize other metro
YMCA facilities as well as the
Forsyth County facility once it is
open, according to Thompson.
We have had some join in
anticipation of the February
opening and some others have
joined and are already using
their membership at the
Alpharetta facility, f» said
Thompson. “Members here can
get involved with things going
on there or if they work in the
[Interstate 285] Perimeter they
can go to a facility on their lunch
hour and their family can still
enjoy the facility here.”
With a community driven
program approach, the YMCA
offers a variety of programs that
suits many needs. Whether it’s
swimming, basketball, exercise
classes or relaxing in the
whirlpool or sauna, members’
toughest decision will be what to
do first.
The open design of the three

YMCA will allow , parents to
check on youth participating in
swimming or basketball from
the circular foyer or the lounging
area. Thompson said the easy
visibility from one area to the
next follows the YMCA’s philos¬
ophy of family and community.
Parents are encouraged to watch
swimming lessons from the
lounging area outside the pool or
relax after an exercise class in
the family room type atmos¬
phere just adjacent to the work-

Another family friendly fea¬
