on Vick’s side in Panthers
By Rick Gosselin
The Dallas Morning News/KRT
Good luck to the Carolina
Panthers on Sunday in their NFC
South showdown with Atlanta.
Falcons quarterback Mike Vick is 5-0
lifetime versus the Panthers....
There are two places no NFL
team wants to see New England
quarterback Tom Brady — in a Super
Bowl, where he is 3-0, or at Gillette
Stadium in Foxboro.
Unfortunately for the Jets, they
draw Brady in Foxboro on Sunday.
Counting playoffs, Brady is 28-4 in
games he has started at Gillette.
Brady once went an entire season
(2003) without throwing an intercep¬
tion at home.
In five games at Gillette this sea¬
son, he has thrown 10 touchdown
' passes and only one interception. In
his six road games, he has thrown
eight touchdowns and nine intercep¬
tions.
Honoring White
The Eagles, during halftime cere¬
monies of the Monday night game
STOP from 1C
the third quarter, outscoring the
Knights 16-8 in the quarter and tak¬
ing a seven-point lead into the fourth.
Seven grew to 13 in the first 90
seconds with Lively hitting two of
his four 3s.
Crucial in extending the lead,
South’s zone defense kept its size
disadvantage hidden as they forced
Central Gwinnett to take outside
shots and limited easy baskets.
■ They like to feed it inside and
they have two big guys there, and we
wanted to see if we could contain
those guys,” Sokol said. “They start¬
ed hitting some shots, but we just
extended the zone a little bit and con¬
tested some shots.
In the next six minutes, however,
South watched that baker’s-dozen
lead dwindle to just two points with
37 seconds remaining as the Black
Knights press created turnovers and
quick baskets.
44 Sometimes [the turnovers were]
decision making on our part. We tried
to make too long of passes,” Sokol
said. “But they are a good team.

FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS — Sunday, December 4,2005
against the Seahawks, will become
the third team this fall to retire the
jersey number 92 of Reggie White.
The Packers retired White’s jer¬
sey at their Sept. 18 game against
Cleveland, and the University of
Tennessee retired his 92 at the Sept.
26 game against Mississippi. The
Packers lost, 26-24, to the Browns,
but Tennessee prevailed, 27-10, over
Ole Miss on those days.
The Seattle game was chosen by
the Eagles for two reasons: It’s a
Monday nighter, which will offer the
festivities maximum exposure, and
White’s former Green Bay coach,
Mike Holmgren, now coaches the
Seahawks. White died last
December of respiratory failure at
age 43.
Interim blues
Good luck also to Dick Jauron
today. He makes his debut as the
Lions’ interim coach — and history
is not on his side.
There have been 64 interim
coaches since 1960, and only 12
managed to win more games than
Sam Goodman scored six of
Central Gwinnett’s points during the
final six minutes, including a fast
break dunk off of a steal that cut the
lead to two.
But 3-of-4 shooting from the free
throw line by Lively and Jacob
Patterson helped keep the lead just
out of Central Gwinnett’s reach, and
a final 3 that would have tied the
game by Dyer fell short as time
expired.
44 Those are the kind of games that
give you somewhat of a heart attack
when you are up [big] and the next
thing you know it is a two-point
game,” Sokol said. “It shows how we
handle adversity. They came back,
made a run and we withheld it. ..
Central Gwinnett 49,
Lady War Eagles 47
Marred by 29 turnovers, many
unforced, and a six-minute scoring
drought between the third and fourth
quarters, the Lady War Eagles fell to

44 Our girls did all the things to get
themselves back into it and we had
some opportunities to get back into
it, but we just didn’t take advantage
of the opportunities like we could
have,” said head coach Keith Gravitt.
- That is something we will be able to
improve on as the season goes on. "
The Lady War Eagles fell behind
quickly in the opening quarter by
five before fighting back to tie the
game at seven. Through the rest of
the half, the two teams traded leads
four times before the Black Knights
took a 33-32 advantage into the lock¬

Neither team managed-to pull

Detroit a winning (9-7) season. But it
wasn’t good enough to,earn him a
full-time shot at the position.
Moeller became the first of three
coaches fired by general manager
Matt Millen. He also hired and fired
Marty Mornhinweg and Steve
Mariucci.
Knights took advantage of a slew of
turnovers to score eight-straight
points.
The main this is that we made
unforced turnovers,” Gravitt said.
That is, again, something you feel
like you can improve on.
South kept the game close and
spurred their comeback with an ever
changing defense that switched
between zone and man-to-man regu¬
larly and by shooting 11-for-14 from
the free-throw line.
44 It was our plan to try to be in a
zone and prevent the big girls from
getting the ball,” Gravitt said of mini¬
mizing his team’s height disadvan¬
tage. “We meant to mix it up.”
Despite the turnovers, Gravitt said
the game was a good learning experi¬
ence in a non-region game.
■ That is the kind of game you
want to play against a non-region
opponent, to measure where you are
at and what you need to work on,
Gravitt said. “Even though we lost, it
is the kind of loss you can learn
from.

to watch, though,” Walls added.
a It really had the feel of the
smaller team in the NCAA
[tournament] not expected to
win finding themselves within
reach of a momentous upset —
especially with no bench to call
on. I can’t say enough good
things about the guys tonight.
They really gave their all.
There were some things we
could have done better or dif
ferently, but, in the end, when
we leave everything on the
court like we did, I can’t com

On the night, Redding led
FCS with 22 points and dished
six assists. Brooks pumped in
18, while Montero rounded out
the scoring with four.

We ask so much out of that
guy,” the Bulldog coach said of
McKevitt. “We were talking the
other day about how much
energy it takes him to play a
game because he’s the point
guard. Everybody sees us and
it’s an automatic press. He’s got
to fight pressure all night long,
he’s got to call out the offense,
he’s the team captain. Right
now he’s not driving the bus,
but we ask him to do a lot of
stuff.
I think I made the state¬
ment the other day: ‘Troy —
T.R.O.Y. Our team relies on
you.’ And we do in a big way.
The Bulldog coach said he
was also proud of Michael
Mohr’s effort on defense, keep¬
ing Alpharetta’s leading scorer,
David Forrest (19 points and
one 3-pointer), off the score
board in the second period.
44 Defensively, he played
with such heart and energized
our defense,” Barnes said.
“I was proud to watch him
play defense tonight. His effort,
intensity and his heart. It was a
good thing to watch. We don’t
have anybody who is a star or
anything. We just rely on each
other. So, it was a team win and
for that we are proud. '
