Little things cloud Braves’ big picture
The only way to get the big pic¬
ture of the 2008 Braves is to focus
on the little things.
This team muddled through the
first quarter of its schedule with a
22-21 record.
Welcome to mediocrity.
And yet, this team remains a
total enigma. You look at the parts,
and analyze the stats, and conclude
that this is a good ballclub.
Certainly decent. Mediocre? No
way.
But there they are: 22-21. And
so they’ve been all season. Check

West Forsyth racked up a
9-1 record playing as a jun¬
ior varsity last fall, but
coach Frank Hepler has
made it clear to his troops
that it’s a whole new ball
game this year. To hear him
tell it, they’ve gotten the
message.
With their first varsity
season ticking closer, the
Wolverines finished up
out their weekly records: 2-3, 3-3,
3-3, 4-3, 2-3, 4-2, 3-4, and 1-0
[through Sunday|. There’s
some stubborn consistency
for you.
Remember when the
Braves would go months at
a time without losing a
series? They’ve won back
to-back series exactly once
this year.
It all adds up to the ninth
best record in the National
League. And yet, the Braves rank
third in run differential. They’re at
players.
Kinard’s playing experience
is well chronicled, as he remains
the only two-time All-American
out of Clemson University, still
holds the Clemson interception
record and was named to the
NFL All-Pro team as a member
of the New York Giants after
spring practice last week
knowing that it won’t be
long before they’re navigat¬
ing a full-blown Region 7
AAA schedule.
“I sensed much more of
a sense of urgency from the
kids [than a year ago], M
Hepler said of the spring
sessions. “[They said things
like] ‘Hey, we’ve got to get
ready for region play. This is

No. They’re 5-1 on Fridays, but

Kinard’s honors include
being a member of the USA

Centennial Team.

of being the very first selection

So these guys should
have a better record than
they do, except that they

Yet they win big at home:
