OPERA from IB
thought that with all the people mov¬
ing into the area, there would be a
certain percentage of the populous
that would enjoy opera,” she said.
“We’re hoping to let people know
that there are people in this commu¬
nity who are capable of singing
opera. n
The idea to bring opera to the area
was a longtime goal of playhouse
director Linda Heard. There was the
possibility of performing a full opera
at the playhouse, but because opera
has never been performed on the
playhouse stage, Heard said she was¬
n’t sure if there was a market yet.
“We want it to be entertaining.
We’re not trying to make people see
something they don’t like. But some¬
times things take seeing, listening
and experiencing it to see if you do
like it,” she said.
“We constantly try to do new
things to see where interest lies and,
of course, opera would be a more
refined performing art, and we want
to try everything.
“This is to get a feeling if there is
an audience and an interest. It’s a
taste of opera.”
Heard said the goal of the play¬
house is to provide an arena for all
performers, without excluding any
musical style. Based on feedback,
Heard said this could lead to
operettas and eventually a full opera,
if there is a demand.
Carroll hopes the diversity of
music will continue to expand the
audience.
“We’re competing with [surround¬
ing] counties very well when it
comes to business, and I think we’re
just a rapidly growing county that
needs to compete with these other
counties in our musical and dramatic
offerings as well.”

COUNTY NEWS - Sunday. May 25. 2008
VETS from IB
recalled the comforts of home.
For Urban Rump, who served
the U.S. Army in the Korean War,
or “the Forgotten War,” coffee was
a comfort.
a We had an endless supply of
hot coffee and we had it in a tin
cup,” he said.
He said he and his brother,
with whom he served with briefly,
drank plenty of it.
Rump also showed students a
kb mess kit,” which consisted of
scant necessities: metal tins, a pan
and plate that could be placed
directly on or near hot coals.
Vietnam veteran Joan
Hickman, a flight nurse, brought
her “wings” and rank for the kids
to examine.
She recalled flying in a plane
named “The Nightingale,” while
nursing men injured in combat to
medical facilities.
We would bring them to hos¬
pitals near their homes,” she said.
“We wanted to give them the best
care ever and to bring them close
to their families.”
She said she met her husband
Bill, also a Vietnam veteran, when
he returned to the United States.
Vietnam veteran Charles
Turner also encouraged students
to appreciate those who served.

he said.
Turner said he was an infantry
ground soldier in Vietnam at age
19 and lamented the loss of his
fellow soldiers.
You never know what these
people would have accomplished
in their lifetimes had they not
been killed,” he said.
Ten months into his tour,
Turner recalled, he suffered a bat-
