New extension agent
seeks community
By Michele Melton
For the Forsyth County News
My name is Michele
Melton, and I am thrilled
about introducing myself as
a new Cooperative Extension
Agent for Forsyth County.
Some of you may be quite
well versed in extension’s
history, philosophy and
vision, but my bet is that
most folks are somewhat in
the dark.
As part of my new posi¬
tion I’ve been asked to write
a weekly column for the
FCN, so I thought a great
place to start would be by
outlining what extension is
and introducing my role
within it.
Let’s begin with exten
ston.
Congress established the
Cooperative Extension
Service in 1914 to deliver
information from colleges
and universities to all
Americans.
The early years empha¬
sized agricultural production
and service-oriented pro¬
grams for individuals.
This early focus on agri¬
culture has led to a long¬
standing misconception that
extension responds only to
issues related to farming,
landscaping, natural re¬
sources, etc.
However, the University
of Georgia Cooperative
Extension Service responds
to peoples’ needs and inter¬
ests not only in agriculture,
but also with families and
children.
Today, three branches
make up the structure of
cooperative extension and
are referred to as:
Agriculture and Natural
Resources, Family and
Consumer Sciences (FACS),

sumer Sciences, extension
agents across the state bring
the latest research in each of
these areas into the commu¬
nities.
The Forsyth County
Extension office, located in
the heart of Cumming, has
staff members in all three
focus areas who are ready to
answer your questions.
Please visit our Web site
at www.ugaextension.com

tion, including a listing of
upcoming events.
About your new FACS
agent:
My educational back¬
ground includes a Bachelor
of Science in Family and
Consumer Sciences/Child
and Family Development and
a Master of Science in
Human Development/Mar¬
riage and Family Therapy.
I have lived in Forsyth
County for just under one
year and started as an exten¬
sion agent in mid-May.
That said, I need your
help.
In the next few months
I’ll be meeting with various
community leaders to assess
the needs of the county in
regards to family and con
sumer science issues.
However, I’m also inter¬
ested in hearing what you
think the needs are. Whether
it’s an idea for a column or a
proposal for a hot topic pro-
and 4-H

gram. I want to know.
My role as your FACS
Cooperative Extension
Agent:
Once the previously men¬
tioned “needs” have been
assessed, I'll be hitting the
streets offering various pro¬
grams, presentation, etc. in
the community.
However, don’t fret if you
have a question or problem
about something that will not
be answered in a program or
presentation.
A large part of my job is
also to help individuals get
answers to their FACS-relat
ed questions. You may be
asking yourself what is and
is not a “FACS-related”
question.
While there’s no way to
exhaust the list in this col¬
umn a few examples include:
cooking, cleaning, parenting,
relationships, nutrition, food
safety and financial literacy.
Now when issues arise,
all you have to do is pick up
the phone or send me an e
mail.
I can’t guarantee that I’ll
know the answer off the top
of my head, but I can prom¬
ise that I'll use all of my
resources to find you the
help you seek.
1 am truly looking for¬
ward to working in this com¬
munity and hope to meet
many of you along the way.
