On the town
It’s that time of year again;
The Bonnaroo festival in
Manchester, Tenn. is kicking
off on Thursday. There are
more than 160 acts packed
into the four day festival.
Bonnaroo takes place on a
700 acre farm in Manchester,
Tenn. — a three hour drive
from Atlanta, one hour from
Nashville,
Tickets range from
$209.50 to $244.50 for the
weekend, including camping
or; RV parking is available for
aa aB4rtfonal $100.
Top billed acts include
Pearl’jhm, Metallica, Jack
Johnsdn, Widespread Panic,
Kanye .West, Robert Plant and
Alison Krauss featuring T
BoneBufnett, Phil Lesh &
Friends, My Morning Jacket,
The Raconteurs, Willie
Nelson, Death Cab for Cutie,
Tiesto, B.B. King, Les
Claypool, Ben Folds, O.A.R.,
Cat Power, Zappa Plays
Zappa, Talib Kweli, Derek
Trucks & Susan Tedeschi, The
Disco Biscuits, Sharon Jones
& The Dap-Kings, Drive-By
Truckers, Dirty Dozen Brass
Band; Minus the Bear, Lez
Zeppelin, Jakob Dylan and the
Gold Mountain, Gogol
Bordello, and Little Feat —
just to name a few.
If 1 personally picked the
line-up, I don’t think I would
change a thing.
Almost all of the headlin¬
ers are bands I would I go see
individually, and most of the
secondary bands are bands I
have been meaning to check
out, so having them all packed
into a single weekend is a per¬
fect opportunity.
Last year I found the com¬
edy tent a great respite from
the heat and this year headlin¬
ers include Louis C.K.,
Janeane Garofalo, .Zach
Galifianakis, Jim Norton,
Brian Posehn, and Mike
Birbiglia.
For the uninitiated, here
is everything you need to
know:
The festival started in 2002
and the word Bonnaroo comes
from the 1974 Dr. John album
"Desitively Bonnaroo,” and is
a Cajun slang word meaning
“a really good time.”
There are five stages of
entertainment.
The main stage is named
the What Stage and can
accommodate 100,000 fans.
The Which Stage, holds
30.000 and between the two
lies.Centeroo, a 24-hour
gathering place featuring
three large music tents (This
Tent, That Tent and the
Other Tent), the Bonnaroo
Market, an arcade tent, a
cinema tent, a comedy tent,
a jazz cafe and tons of other
activities.
This year more than
100.000 people are expected
to gather to embark on the
four-rday music and arts jour-

Bonnaroo has transformed
from all jam band performers
to an incredibly eclectic group
of musicians.
The music plays non-stop
Thursday through Sunday,
from 12:30 p.m. until 3:30
a.m..
The festival sells out, but
even with 100,000 attendees
on hand, it never seems
crowded.
There is plenty to do at any
given time, but it’s never over¬
whelming.
There are four main stages
and the What Stage is a stadi¬
um size lot that could — and
does — accommodate the
entire festival at once.
Most bands play for an
hour and a half.
The set times are staggered
and the stages are close
enough that you can easily
meander between them and
check out several bands at any
given time.
I had my first Bonnaroo
experience last year and it was
by far, the best festival 1 have
ever attended.
The people are awesome
and I made plenty of new
friends, saw lots of great
bands. It was an experience I
will remember for years to
come.

Bonnaroo including ticket info,
schedules, and anything else

ing to Manchester, check out

This week the light hearted
and fun ABBA-themed musi¬
cal Mamma Mia! returns to the
Fox Theatre, opening on
Tuesday night.
The smash Broadway sen¬
sation weaves 22 of ABBA’s
greatest hits into the story of a
40-something single mother,

hotel on a mythical Greek
island.
Her Daughter, Sophie, is
getting married and wants to
invite her father.
The only problem is she
doesn’t know who her father is
— and neither does her mother.
It seems that Donna was on the
road in a band during the sum¬
mer of 1979 and had three
flings, one of which resulted in
Sophie.
So, Sophie invites all three
potential fathers, as well her
mother’s two former band
mates to the wedding.
As a result, you get to
spend two days on a Greek
island, enjoying a consistently
funny and occasionally
poignant story of family and
friends.
While the plot is mostly a
thinly veiled device to string
ABBA songs together, half the
fun is in trying to figure out
which one they are going to do
next.
It’s an ABBA concert come
to life and the show has fans on
their feet and dancing in the
aisles.
If songs titles like “Dancing
Queen,” “Money, Money,
Money,” “Take A Chance on
Me,” “Gimme! Gimme!
Gimme!,” and “Knowing Me,
Knowing You” have you hum¬
ming to yourself, this show is a
must.
Running through Saturday,
Mamma Mia! is a great time.
