The team had six players

and had the most of any team in
the North Region. Receiving All

Zach Carlisle, Garcia, Metz,

Pinecrest also fielded a signif¬

MORRIS from 1C
places like Sanford Stadium in
Athens, Florida’s “Swamp” or
LSU’s Tiger Stadium, he’s joined
by men who are doctors, judges,
dentists or businessmen in their
“real lives.
Having a dad who knew the chal¬
lenges inherent with the job was a
bulwark earlier in his career, Gus
Morris said.
One particularly trying moment
came after he called an unsports¬
manlike conduct penalty on former
Florida coach Steve Spurrier during
a tight game at LSU in 1997.
Florida, ranked No. 1 coming in,
lost 28-21 and Gus Morris saw out¬
raged Gator fans calling for his sus¬
pension or termination.
He related how his father, along
with other officials who were friends
of both men, stuck by him through
the tempest.
- “He kind of just eased in beside
me and said, ‘It’s going to blow
over. You’ll be there when they’re
gone. Just hang in there and keep
doing what you’re supposed to do, i 9$
Gus Morris said.
When the elder Morris died sud¬
denly this past December, football
would add one final bit of adhesive,
playing a big part in helping the son
remember and honor the father.
George Morris was a founder
and longtime president of the
Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year
Foundation, established in 1976 to
annually honor one college football
coach for displaying scholarship,
leadership and integrity. Those
attributes are based on the example
set by Bobby Dodd, the legendary
Georgia Tech coach whom George
Morris played for during his col
lege career and maintained a close
relationship with in later life.
Before his death in 1988, Dodd
was quoted as referring to the elder
Morris as “the finest player I have
ever coached.”
Gus Morris said his father felt an
intense closeness to the old coach, to
the extent that he refused to pass up
the chance to be a pallbearer at
Dodd’s funeral, despite having just
undergone knee surgery.
That same passion showed up in
his work for the Dodd Foundation.
.. He really put the energy into it,
and he was very, very proud of that
award,” Gus Morris said of his

father.
Past recipients of the award prac
tically make up a Who’s Who of col
lege football coaches: Georgia’s
Vince Dooley, Nebraska’s Tom
Osborne, Penn State’s Joe Paterno
and Florida State’s Bobby Bowden
have all won it.
In December, the foundation was
two days from selecting another
honoree when fate stepped in.
.* I was on the phone talking to
my dad when one of the other board
members called him and my dad
said 'Look, I’ve got to take this
other call’ and he did, and the call
was in regards to the award,” Gus
Morris said.
Less than half an hour later, he
received a phone call: George was
gone. An apparent heart attack had
quickly ended his life after 76
years.
“That was it, and we talked just
about every day,” Gus Morris said,
It was a shock, and it’s been a
huge, huge loss, but my dad was
either wide open or else he was
asleep, and that’s just the kind of
person he was.”
Days later, George’s associates
with the foundation picked a coach
to honor, and his son has no doubt
that their decision was a final salute
to George,
George Morris had lobbied hard
for this year’s award to go to Lloyd
Carr, who retired in January after 13
seasons coaching the University of
Michigan,
Carr received the honor from the
foundation by a unanimous vote —
the first time that’s happened in the
history of the award.
“People respected my dad. ...
Coach Carr is a great coach and is a
great man, but I think out of respect
for Coach Carr and my dad, they did
it and it was unanimous and so it
was quite a tribute to both Coach
Carr and my dad,” Gus Morris said.
One distinctive feature of the
Dodd award is that it’s given to the
coach at a venue at or near the
school where he works, allowing
him to receive the honor in a home
town setting surrounded by familiar
faces.
With Carr receiving this year’s
award, Gus Morris and his mother,
Polly Wren Morris, were both invit
ed to attend the banquet and presen-

.. We flew up there, I think it was
a Tuesday morning, and then they
had the awards banquet that night.
We woke up to a foot of snow on
Wednesday morning, and then less
than 24 hours [later], we were back
in Atlanta,” Gus Morris said.
“We sat with the [Michigan] ath¬
letic director, but [our role] was
more just being there at the request
of the board members.... My mother
and I were very honored that they
asked us to go. It was really a won¬
derful trip, it really was. * •
Gus Morris said his father’s
absence at the event was palpable.
“It’s a little cliche, but Dad was a
little bigger than life. He could go
into a room and just light it up. He
had never met a stranger. I mean,
everybody was his buddy, or he
made 'em his buddy ... With him not
being there, those guys felt a void
that he had always been there to take
care of,” he said.
Making the trip to Michigan,
along with his travels through SEC
territory in the regular season and to
other parts of the country to officiate
bowl games that don't involve SEC
teams, have all given Gus Morris
firsthand evidence of the largeness
of college football in all corners of
the nation.
“There’s some places in this
country that during the football sea¬
son, that may be all they have,” he
said. “The community of college
football is enormous, and I think it’s
becoming even larger just because
of the amount of games that people
can see now on cable or satellite TV,
or feven on the internet.
“Thirty years ago, you were
lucky to see two games a weekend
as long as the big networks were
carrying them. Now, you’ve got to
go to a sports bar to see all the
games that are available. ... That’s
just what makes college football the
greatest sport in the world.
Everybody’s so into it. **
So despite the loss of a passion¬
ate ambassador in George Morris,
college football will only get bigger.
That’s something that any father or
son brought up to love the game
could appreciate.
