With fall sports about to rev up,
it’s time to take a quick look back
at Forsyth’s boys of spring, with
<|ie 2008 Forsyth County News All
Qjunty Baseball Team.
Coaches from all four public
high Jtys schools got together to pick
year’s squad, comprised of the
test local talent on the diamond.
***‘-Leading the way are the coun
ty’s Co-Players of the Year, South
Forsyth’s Curtis Parker and North
Forsyth’s Bones Dalken, along with
South’s Chris Rowley, who was
named Pitcher of the Year.
Parker played designated hitter
and pitched for the War Eagles dur
ing last season, his junior year.
South’s team MVP, he ended the
season with a .459 batting average,
hitting nine home runs and driving
in 25 runs. He made it on base 54
percent of the time. On the mound,
he recorded a 5-2 record with 25
strikeouts in 31 innings.
War Eagles’ coach Jamie Corr,
who was named Coach of the Year
for the county, described Parker as
a true offensive threat at the plate.
Rowley, a rising senior, recorded
a 5-4 record for South, producing a
2.25 earned run average and striking

Dalken, a catcher getting ready
to start his senior year, was also
named co-player of the year in
Region 7-AAAAA. Raiders’ coach
Jim Cahill pointed to his power at
the plate, and described him as an
important part of North’s run pro¬
duction last season.
Moving on, the All-County first
team has a War Eagle feel, reflect
ing South’s success in making it to
the second round of the Class
AAAAA state playoffs.
Along with Parker and Rowley,
South is represented in the first tier
by Chad Ward, Zach Alvord, Jordan
Neese, Will Gates and Kevin
Bibler.
Ward played first base during
what was his senior year, hitting
.417 with five homers, and driving
in 30 runs. Corr described him as a
great team leader with an incredible
work ethic.
Alvdrd, now a rising junior, hit
.408 at second base for the Eagles,
going yard nine times and driving in
30 runs. Corr said Alvord has unlim
ited talent and showed great improve
ment during his sophomore year.
Neese, a rising senior, hit .333
Midway park. 9/10U tryouts
will be at 9 a.m., with 11/12U
to follow at 10:30 a.m. For

11U Lanier
Vipers tryouts
The 11U Lanier Vipers
will hold tryouts for the
spring 2009 season on
Sunday, Aug. 10, 4-6 p.m. at
Midway Park field No. 7.
The team is looking for
pitchers, catchers and
dependable utility players.
The players will receive
good fundamentals from
experienced coaches and
will begin practice this fall.

team
outdoor and indoor sessions
throughout fall and winter
with top-level instructors.
The team will play in the
Lanier Baseball League and
in several tournaments.

stop is one of the state’s top defen
sive infielders.
Gates played outfield, hitting
.433 with 17 RBI and 10 stolen
bases, scoring 33 times during the
season. The recent South graduate
was a tough out at the plate, Corr
said, and should continue his offen
sive excellence at Georgia College
& State University.
Bibler, a pitcher, recorded a 5-5
mark with a 3.21 ERA and 33
strikeouts in 48 innings of work.
“[Kevin] made great strides dur
ing his junior year to emerge as a
go-to guy in the playoffs,” Corr
said.
Three North Raiders join team¬
mate Dalken on the first team:
Taylor McGilvray, Tyler Slaton and
Jacob Otwell.
Cahill said that McGilvray, who
played third base, had a great junior
year this past season. He described
him as a solid defensive player with
excellent knowledge of the game.
Slaton, an outfielder, made a
tremendous impact as a freshman,
Cahill said. A great athlete with
huge upside, the young player set
the table for North’s offense all
year, the coach said.
Otwell fills the utility player
role on the All-County squad. The

straight years. Cahill described him
as a solid, smart player with excel
lent speed, batting average and
power.
Dustin Canon and Michael
Moch represent Forsyth Central
and West Forsyth, respectively, on
the first team.
Outfielder Canon batted over
.400 for most of his junior season.
Former Central coach J.P. Denato,
now a school administrator in Ware
County, said Canon is a tremendous
athlete with a great work ethic. He
described him as the Bulldogs’ top
hitter, with a solid combination of
power, contact and speed.
“He was our lead-off hitter and
very successful at getting an inning
started in the right direction,
Denato said of Canon.
Canon was just as solid on
defense, his former coach said.
“If the ball was hit from left
field gap to right field gap in the
air, Dustin was going to catch it. He
has a great reaction to the ball and
very good speed to go along with
it,” Denato said.
Moch, a rising senior, was the
Wolverines’ top option on the
mound this season.

PLA Volleyball
PLA Volleyball, a Junior
Olympic volleyball club based
in Forsyth County, has organ¬
ized a fall volleyball league to
be held in Cumming.
The league is an opportu¬
nity for players 10-15 to get
quality volleyball training and
game play in a fun and posi¬
tive instructional environ¬
ment. No prior experience is
necessary.
The Select Volleyball
League will take place on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from
6-8 p.m., beginning Aug. 19.
Games will take place at The
Church of the Good Shepherd
at 3740 Holtzclaw Road.
Players may register as
individuals or as a team.
Individual registration is $150
per person or team registration
(7-8 players) is $960.
