Styx and Boston on the horizon, Six Hags a blast

On the town
We celebrated the end of
summer with a last hurrah at
Six Flags.
With gas prices so high,
many families are staying clos¬
er to home. There is no better
time to check out Six Flags.
Six Flags keeps getting bet¬
ter year after year. While we
went to check out Raven
Symone, who was playing
courtesy of their free summer
concert series, it was the rides
that made our visit.
The Flash Fastpass, which
costs an additional $10 to rent
and a $19 per-person charge,
helped us zoom through the
lines. ' *
Basically you scan your
device at each ride and it gives
you a time to return that would
equal your wait time, but you
don’t haVe to be there. Kind of
like call ahead seating for
roller coasters.
You can also upgrade to
Gold Flash Pass for $25 to rent
and $32 per person which
reduces your wait time up to
75 percent.
It’s certainly a more expen¬
sive way to go, but if you are
only going to be there one day,
you will be amazed at how
quickly you can experience
almost everything in the park.
My kids are just getting to
the age where roller coasters
are a blast. And we rode every¬
thing.
Their newest ride, the steel
coaster Goliath, lived up to
expectations.
It was great ... 200 feet is
seriously high, and the ride
lasted a long time.
While my middle-aged
neck can’t handle The Great
American Scream Machine
and the Ninja anymore, I loved
the smooth speed of
Superman: Ultimate Flight.
You actually ride the coast¬
er in a horizontal position.
This ride is worth waiting for
the front seat.

Batman: The Ride,
Acrophobia, The Georgia
Cyclone, The Mind Bender,
The Georgia Scorcher, The
Wheelie, The Log Jamboree,
Splashwater Falls, and a good
hour-and-a-half at the Skull
Island mini-water park were
all easily fit into an unrushed
day.
The Raven Symone concert
at the Park Pavilion was a
great time, the highlight of
which was “Double Dutch
Bus” from her movie “College
Road Trip” co-starring Martin
Lawrence, now out on DVD.
I took a detour to check out
Thomas Town, a new area for
children. While my children
are a little old for Thomas
now, I wish it was there when
they were younger.
There was a period of years
when my son was obsessed
with his Thomas the Train set,
and just walking into this area
would have given him excite¬
ment overload.
There is an amazing play
fort for running and jumping
oh and little models of Bertie
the Bus and Harold the
Helicopter for climbing on.
Best of all kids can ride on

Plan ahead, as a week from
today Styx is making their
Verizon Amphitheatre debut
next Sunday along, with
Boston.
The venue is so close, it
makes checking them out a no
brainer.
Styx is still the great band
you remember, but in my opin¬
ion, the current line-up is even
better than the original.
Even though Dennis De
Young has long since parted
with the band, Tommy Shaw
and James “JY” Young keep
the band connected to their
roots, while fresh faces
Lawrence Gowan (keyboards,
vocals), Todd Sucherman
(drums), and Ricky Phillips
(Bass) infuse the band with
fresh energy.
Tne band’s more recent
CDs, like 2003’s “Cyclorama
and 2005’s “Big Bang Theory,”
are among my favorites.
Live, the band is an amaz¬
ing force with Sucherman’s
drumming and Gowan’s key¬
board.
The group’s latest release is
2006’s “One With Everything,”
a live CD/DVD set that cap¬
tures Styx performing their hit
songs with The Contemporary
Youth Orchestra of Cleveland
— if you haven’t seen Styx
lately, check it out to see what
you are missing.
Also this week you can
check out the cutting edge of
music at the Rockstar Energy
Mayhem Festival at Lake
wood.
Starting a 2 p.m. the festi¬
val features 13 bands.
Not only can you check out
known headliners like
Disturbed and Slipknot, but
newcomers like 36 Crazy Fists
and Airboume.
I just listened to 36 Crazy
Fists fifth CD “The Tide and
its Takers” and it’s one of my
favorite metal albums of the
year. If you haven’t seen Brock
Lindow and company live —
they are worth the $28.50
admission alone.
Last but not least don’t miss
the Nine Inch Nails show at
The Arena at Gwinnett on
Wednesday.
They are touring in celebra¬
tion of “The Slip,” a CD of
new material which can be
downloaded for free off their
website www.nin.com.

entertainment on the town. For
