New beginnings not only for children
By Michelle Melton
For the Forsyth County News
Go ahead and prepare your¬
self. Tomorrow the traffic will
be a mess. As you drive to
work you’ll see packs of kids
standing curbside, anxiously
awaiting the bus for their first
day of school.
And inevitably, you’ll also
get stuck behind one of those
aforementioned buses, so just
go ahead and accept it.
You’ll see nervous parents
waving goodbye and droopy
eyed teens wondering where
the lazy days .of summer have
gone.
In addition to the new year,
M Back to School” time marks
one of the best opportunities for
a fresh start. Unfortunately, we
often limit this chance for new
beginnings only to kids. With
the start of school and the
arrival of fall, it’s the perfect
opportunity for entire families
to get into new, healthier rou¬
tines.
Don’t worry. I’m not inter¬
ested in getting you to swear
off sweets completely or to
switch from beef to tofu. New
habits don’t stand a chance
unless they’re reasonable. With
America’s continuing obesity

Bringing your lunch is one
of the habits that can affect
both health and finances posi¬
tively (and yes, this applies to
mom and dad too!). School
lunches are required to meet
certain health standards, and
are more affordable than what’s
available to most adults.
So if you must choose, it
may be more important for
working parents to brown-bag
it than the kids. Whether it’s
right after dinner, or before
getting the kids up in the
morning, the trick is to devel¬
op a routine of making lunch¬
es before it’s time to run out
the door.
Developing a plan is the
key to making any changes in
behavior. ’ Did you struggle
with getting your kids to start
their homework last year?

ule? Were you late to work
more often than not? And
there’s always meal-time: can
you think of the last time your
family ate around the dinner
table together? Sounds like
you need a plan — or three.
I know, I know. You’re too
busy, too tired, too stressed
out or too unprepared. Well,
in the words of Benjamin
Franklin: “He that is good for
making excuses is seldom
good for anything else.
Don’t expect perfection from
the first day, but get yourself
out of making excuses that
prolong bad habits. Getting
into a new routine often
requires trial and error.
We over-schedule our¬
selves by several hours each
day; therefore, it’s going take
some time to find the right (or
at least a more acceptable)
balance.
What are the new habits
you’d like to see in your fami¬
ly? Are you willing to take
the time to develop a plan?
Can you think of ways to
reward yourself for a job well
done? Is your family willing
to work together so one per¬
son doesn’t bear the burden
for all the changes?
These are just some of the
