‘Monadnock’
spells victory
for trio from
Lanier Tech
By Julie Arrington
Staff Writer
Could you spell “monadnock”
on the first try?
The Blonde Bombspells from
Lanier Technical College can —
and did.
By doing so, the three-woman
team won the Forsyth County
Certified Literate Community
Program’s Spell Check Live! for a
second year in a row Tuesday
night.
The spelling bee, held in the
performing arts center at Forsyth
Central High School, benefits the
Certified Literate Community
Program.
The Bombspells Donna
Brinson, Carol Brown and Kathy
Davis — topped the United Way’s
Bee Givers in the final round.
Last year the Bombspells were
called the Phonetic Fanatics. This
year they out-spelled 10 other
teams for the bee’s top spot.
“Monadnock” is defined by
Webster’s as a “hill or mountain
of resistant rock surmounting a
peneplain.
Brinson said she studied a lit
tie bit and some of the words in
this year’s competition were
repeats that stumped spellers last
year.
“We had to defend our cham¬
pionship this year because Carol’s
moving,” she joked.
While Brown may not return
next year, Brinson and Davis said
they likely will come back for a
shot at a third title.
Stephanie Ferguson, who is
working on her master’s at the
University of Georgia, served as
the bee’s wordsmith.
Ferguson repeated words and
used them in sentences while par¬
ticipants nervously jotted alter

No new
evidence
in deaths
Case still points
to one neighbor
shooting other
By Julie Arrington
Staff Writer
Authorities say no new evidence
has surfaced in last week’s shooting
deaths of two neighbors in eastern
Forsyth County:
Forsyth County Sheriff’s investi¬
gators said Tuesday they are awaiting
the results of autopsies and forsenic
testing from the Georgia Bureau of
Investigation crime lab, which could
take three to four weeks.
In the meantime, they say, it still
appears that one man killed the other
before shooting himself.
William Miller, an employee of
75-year-old Iowa Hill “Buddy”
Preston, found Preston’s body about 1
p.m. Aug. 6 in his apartment on
Carlton Road. The apartment is one of
four at the site Preston owned.
Miller worked for Preston at
Appliance Heaven on Franklin
Goldmine Road in west Forsyth.
Just hours after Miller’s discovery,
authorities found the body of John
Michael Lito, 50, in an apartment he
rented next door to Preston.
Both men had been shot, authori¬
ties said, and Lito’s wound appeared
to be self-inflicted.
“According to our pathologist, pre¬
liminary indications are that Lito’s
wound was consistent with a self
inflicted gunshot wound,” said Capt.
Paul Taylor, commander of the sher¬
iff’s criminal investigations division.
Taylor said those same indications
show Preston died as the result of a
single gunshot wound.
Within hours of finding the bodies,
Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton
said the case was being investigated
as a murder-suicide.
Miller said he worked for Preston
