Rolf Batzer
Rolf Batzer, age 93, died
April 2, 2008.
A memorial service for him
will be Friday, Aug. 22, at
11:30 a.m. at the Trinity
Presbyterian Church on
Browns Bridge Road in
Gainesville. Rolf died due to
complications of pneumonia.
He was preceded in death by
his wife, Helen of 60 years;
and his son, Jon.
Rolf was the eldest of three
children bom to Olga and John
Olsen Batzer, immigrants from
Oslo, Norway, in the early
1900s. Rolf was 15 years old
in 1929 when he earned the
rank of Eagle Scout. After high
school, he attended Boeing
Aeronautical School in San
Francisco, afterwards accept
ing a job with United Airlines
in January of 1937. He married
his high school sweetheart,
Helen Johansen in 1939. After
many moves, they settled in
Northville, Mich., and raised
four children. He served as a
scout mast'er for many years
during the time his son was
active in scouting. He was then
station manager for United at
Detroit Metropolitan Airport
and continued to work there
until retirement after serving
40 years with the company.
In retirement, Rolf and
Helen purchased a home on
Lake Lanier in Cumming. Rolf
volunteered at both Northeast
Georgia Medical Center and
Northside Hospital-Forsyth.
He was active in the Trinity
Presbyterian Church. He
enjoyed wood crafts and
assembled many wooden
model ships. Rolf and Helen
traveled extensively, visiting
their children, grandchildren
and family in Norway. They
“snow birded” each winter on
Honeymoon Island in Florida,
Rolf is survived by his
three daughters, Lisa, Lauri
and Joan; many grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, niece and
nephews.

Waddell Jr.
Samuel “Sam” Milton
Waddell Jr., age 65, of
Suwanee (Forsyth County)
passed away peacefully at his
home on Monday, Aug. 11,
2008, after a long battle with
Pick’s disease. He was a devot¬
ed husband, father, grandfather
and friend. He was born in
Zanesville, Ohio, to the late
Samuel and Letha Waddell on
June 29, 1943, and was preced¬
ed in death by his parents and
his sister, Susan.
He is survived by his wife
of 39 years Charlotte; daugh
ters, Tracy Gallo and husband
Anthony, Lynn Robertson and
husband James, Kathy Brooks
and husband Derek; grandchil
dren, Shiloh Brooks, Gavin
and Grayson Robertson; broth¬
er, Joe; several nieces,
nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the fami¬
ly requests contributions in his
memory may be made to

Jesse David Hitt
Jesse David Hitt, age 78,
of Buford died Thursday,
Aug. 14, 2008.
He was preceded in death
by his daughter, Pamela Hitt
Pearman; brother, John
Henry Hitt; and sister,
Eleanor Coltrain.
He is survived by his wife
of 58 years, Margie Stewart
Hitt of Buford; daughters and
sons-in-law, Patricia and
Lynn Dampier of Moultrie,
Robin and Billy Davis of
Buford; son-in-law, Rod
Pearman of Buford; daugh
ter, Sheila and Jeff Autry and
son, Zack of Jefferson;
grandchildren, Kim Davis,
Kristen Keen, Brian Davis,
Dr. Loucinda Dampier
Sawinski and husband Adam,
Leslee Dampier Bryan and
husband Joseph, Trey
Dampier; great-grandson,
Job* Bryan; brother and sis
ter-in-law, T.M. and Annette
Hitt of Cumming; sister,
Imogene Moose of
Snellville; sisters-in-law and
brothers-in-law, Evelyn and
Garston Green of Cumming,
Lillian Mullinax of
McDonough, Louise and
Roger Smith of Buford; sev
eral nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Mr. Hitt was a native of
Cherokee County. He was a
veteran of the U.S. Marines
having served in the Korean
War for two years and six
months. He was a retired TV
and VCR repairman with
Sears, Roebuck & Co. for
more than 30 years,
He was a member of
Shadowbrook Baptist Church
in Suwanee where He was a
former Sunday school
teacher and a weekly Bible
study leader. He loved his
family and will be greatly
missed. He was an avid fish
erman, gardener and carpen
ter.
Funeral services were
held Saturday, Aug. 16, at 6
p.m. in the Chapel of
Flanigan Funeral Home with
the Rev. Michael Davis and
the Rev. Bobby Linkous offi
ciating. Interment followed
at Broadlawn Memorial
Gardens in Buford with mili¬
tary honors. The grandchil¬
dren will serve as honorary
pallbearers. The family
received friends at the funer¬
al home on Friday from 4-9
p.m. and on Saturday from 4
p.m. until the funeral hour.

Stephen M. D’Onfro
Stephen M. D’Onfro, age
49, died Wednesday, Aug. 13,
2008, from complications
resulting from cancer.
Advantis Technologies
mourns the loss of its presi
dent. Stephen faced his illness
as he did other aspects of his
life: with courage, a positive
attitude, equanimity and grace,
Bom in Leominster, Mass.,
on Aug. 24,1958, he graduated
from Leominster High School
in 1976 and Syracuse
University in 1980 with a BS
in Accounting. He earned his
CPA in 1982. He worked for
Touche Ross in New Jersey,
Oregon and Australia and Price
Waterhouse in Boston. Mr.
D’Onfro joined Gary Chemical
Corp. as CFO in 1987, which
ultimately became part of
Rockwood Holdings Inc. For
the past 11 years, he served as
President of Advantis
Technologies Inc., the water
technology business unit of
Rockwood based in Alpharetta,
Mr. D’Onfro was an effective
executive, respected for his
compassion and leadership
abilities, as well as his busi
ness acumen.
Steve is survived by his
wife of 23 years, Beth; and
three daughters, Katherine,
Jillian and Madeline of
Westminster, Mass.
There will be a memorial
service on his birthday, Aug
24, at the First Church
Unitarian Universalist, 15 West
Street, Leominster, Mass.
A small memorial includ
ing local friends and employ
ees will be conducted at 1:30
p.m. on Aug. 18 at Advantis
Technologies, 1400 Bluegrass
Lakes Parkway, Alpharetta,
GA 30004.

June Gertrude Colombo,
87, of Cumming died at her
home on Aug. 15, 2008. The
daughter of the late Harry
and Nellie Stoutenburgh,
Mrs. Colombo was a native
of New York.
She graduated from
Kingston High School and
worked for Western Union.
During World War II, she was
responsible for all notifica¬
tions. She worked at the
Woodstock Playhouse in New
York and served as a Girl
Scout leader. Mrs. Colombo
also made dolls for the annu¬
al church bazaar while in
Waldwick, N.J.
Since moving to
Cumming in 2001, Mrs.
Colombo has been an active
member of Cumming First
United Methodist Church
where she and her husband
were members of the Sorta
Fifties class,
Mrs. Colombo is survived
by her beloved husband of 61 !
years, Ed Colombo of
Cumming; daughters, June E. I
Colombo and Elaine M.
Colombo grandchildren. of Heather Cumming; and j
Jeremy Durkin of Braselton;
and great-grandchildren,
Alexis and Dustin Durkin.
Services will be held at 11
a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, in the
McDonald and Son Funeral
Home Chapel. Members of
the Sorta Fifties class will
serve as honorary pallbearers.
The Rev. Ron Preuss will
officiate. Interment will fol
low at a later date in
Woodstock, N.Y. The family
will receive friends Monday,
Aug. 18, from 4-6 p.m. at the
funeral home.

Firefighters put out
blaze at paint store

A fire at a paint store
Friday in southern Forsyth
County appears to have start
ed outside the building.
The Forsyth County Fire
Department was dispatched
around 5:20 p.m. to Sherwin
Williams at 2370 Atlanta
Hwy. after flames were seen
at the rear of the building,
Firefighters worked quick
ly to control the blaze. By
about 5:40 p.m., they had
begun salvage and overhaul
work at the building,
Forsyth County Fire
Department spokesman Capt.
Jason Shivers said the fire
likely started externally and
made its way to the building.
Shivers said firefighters

racks of chemicals and paint
inside the store,
No injuries were reported
