Femi Kuti and I'he Beastie Bovs. I am not particularly a jam band kind of guy, but there was something masiical about the Phish reunion. 1 also wandered over to catch Public Enemy with Flavor Elav and Chuck D at the mic. Did I mention Flavor Flax was there? Need I sav more? On Saturday 1 started the day with Jimmy Buffett and ended it with Springsteen and Nine Inch Nails. That was worth every minute of the three-hour drive to Manchester, Tenn., right there. In between I saw Robyn Hitchcock <£ The Venus 3, Raphael Saadiq. The weather was tempered by threatening rain, but the 90-plus degree temperatures made the air-conditioned Butt erfi nger Comed y Tent a double pleasure. Robert Smigel as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog put on an act custom made for Bonnaroo and filmed for segments on the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. One liners like. "Bonnaroo is kind o! like the Superdome at Hurricane Katrina, only outdoors and without the hope." and. "Phish is getting back together alter five years, it’s a shame because they could have played four or five songs in that time," had me rolling. Jimmy Fallon blew me away with one of the best comedy routines 1 have ever seen. He closed his act with a tribute to all the comedi¬ ans that ever played Bonnaroo. His impressions, from Bill Cosby to Chris Rock, were all dead on and hilarious. Sunday 1 got my sec¬ ond wind. It would have been a fairly laid back day with Citizen Cope, Andrew Bird. Todd Snider. Erykah Badu. Band of Horses. Neko Case, topped with a sec¬ ond helping of Phish. However, the festival dedicated the That Tent to metal, and these bands rocked like thev had something to prove. High on Eire and Shadow's Eall were awe¬ some. However, it was New York band Coheed and Cambria that took it to another level. Their metal is so grand in scope I was captivated. But 6 p.m. Sunday was really the moment the diversity and wonder of Bonnaroo sank in. I was at Merle Haggard watching a country legend perform at the top of his game and then walked over to the main stage to check out Snoop Dogg. Where else would such a tiling be possible? More than 75TMKJ peo¬ ple descended on the grounds. While everyone had to be hot and tired, there was a smile on each face. That's a year's worth of nights on the town in three day s. I get tired even think¬ ing about it. but by the time Bonnaroo 2010 comes around 1 won’t remember the sweat or the swollen ankles, only the incredible experience etched in my memory for a lifetime.
