No one hurt in blaze
By Jennifer Sana

A Forsyth County gas station likely
will remain closed for some time fol¬
lowing a fire early Monday
Forsyth County Fire Capt. Jason
Shivers said 3bout 20 percent of the
Shell at Dahlonega Highway and
Sawnee Drive was damaged by smoke
and fire
"(The owner’s) going to be closed
until he can get the repairs made, but it’s
* certainly salvageable," Shistrs said.
The business, which is near the
Cumming branch of the Forsyth County
Public Library, was closed at the time of
the blaze. A passing motorist reported it
about 4 a.m.
The incident shut down the highway
for nearly two hours, according to
Shivers
"We were able to have (the road)
reopened by 6 a m., before the morning
commute and school traffic became an

flagged down a passing motorist.
According to responders, the two
were wearing life jackets when fire¬
fighters arrived.

have that main thoroughfare opened
before the commute started "
Investigators were also at the station
Monday morning, however Shivers said
nothing about the fire appeared to be
suspicious ’ at least at this Umc."
"They are going to be looking at it to
try to (determine! a cause of origin,"
Shivers said
The blaze was the second of two in
less than 24 hours firefighters fought off
Dahlonega Highway.
Sunday night, a chicken house caught
fire near where the highway meets
Tallant Road, north of the Coal
Mountain community
The chicken house was empty, as a
truck had just picked up a load pnor to
the fire, according to Shivers
The fire was "c om plet el y accidental,"
he said, and likely stalled during mainte¬
nance after the chickens were removed.
"It was a high w ind day and certainly
it had the potential to spread But we
were able to be there quickly enough to
prevent the spread to the neighboring
structures"
Army Corps of Engineers and Forsyth
County Fire Department were
deployed
About 30 minutes into the search,
which also involved Gwinnett police's
aviation unit, the body of a man was
found.
The body, later identified as Jones,
was turned over to the Gwinnett
County Medical Examiner to deter¬
mine the cause of death
A search of the lake ended with the
discovery of a second boat about 5
a.m. in the Shoal Creek area near Last
Bank Park
Rescuers found a woman on board,
whom they later took to North Fulton
Hospital in Roswell.
At last report, the woman remained
hospitalized in serious condition.
