Goldthwait, Lampanelli in town

but he's probably most
known for being on “Mad

recently, “Curb Your
Enthusiasm.”
He's a Second City
alumnus and just
launched a podcast, “By
the Way, In Conversation
with Jeff Garlin.”” With all
that, plus working as a
director and producer,
Garlin still appreciates
going back to his roots in
stand-up.
His comedy style is a
lot like his podcast-con
versation. He's not your
“write-memorize-deliver”
type of comedian. There's
a few more “ums”
involved. but it feels more
natural, almost like you're
part of the show.
Lisa Lampanelli, who
will be at the Tabernacle
on Saturday, is complete
ly the opposite. She’s
loud and crass and talks/
rants at you, not with you.
She’s an insult comic, so
that’s her shtick.

Bobcat Goldthwait,
who'll be at the Laughing
Skull Lounge tonight.
You might remember
Goldthwait from his dis
tinctive voice made popu
lar by his work in several
of the “Police Academy”
movies. The stand-up
comedian has also kept
himself busy as a director,
working on episodes of
“Important Things with
Demetri Martin,” “Jimmy
Kimmel Live!"
“Chappelle’s Show™ and
“The Man Show.”
His most recent movies
include “God Bless
America” and “World's
Greatest Dad,” starring
Robin Williams.
I saw Goldthwait a few
years ago on his last stop
in Atlanta and was hon
estly surprised. | was
expecting to hear the
screechy voice that made
him famous.
While it surfaced from
time to time, it turns out,
he didn’t need to rely on
the gimmick. He was hys
terical without it.
Also hysterical is Jeff
Garlin, who will be at the
Laughing Skull on Friday
and Saturday.
He’s done a bunch of
voiceover work, including
small characters in “Toy
Story 3" and “Wall-E.”

On that note, do you remem
ber when flying on an airplane
required you to dress up?
I realize it used to be a
much bigger deal to board a
plane back in the day, and I'm
all for wearing comfortable
clothes when you travel, but
really, so many people have
sunk to an all-time low with
what they wear on an air
plane.
Perhaps the pajama pants
man was an artist. Maybe he
was up all night working on a
painting and he just absent
mindedly forgot he still had
his pajama pants on as he
dashed out of the house to do
some shopping.
Or maybe he had been up
all night with his baby or
grandbaby and was sleep
deprived.
When our youngest was a
baby, I had sleep deprivation
so bad I did all sorts of silly
things. I never did wear my
pajamas out in public, but I did
discover my shirt was inside
out once, and mismatched
socks were commonplace.
What are your thoughts about
the culture’s current dress poli
cy or lack thereof?

Striking Matches’ debut,

iTunes listed it on its best of
2012 list.
The duo also got a big

They've since been invited
back for a second time, and
performed during Nashville’s
New Year’s Eve celebration
to a crowd of about 75,000
people.
Both Davis and
Zimmermann said they were
especially thrilled to perform
at the Grand Ole Opry.
“We debuted at the Ryman
and that was two dreams
coming true at the same time,
so that was a bit overwhelm
ing,” Davis said. “They told
us on Wednesday and we
were playing on Friday, so at
least there wasn’t much time
to get nervous or anything.
“We just showed up and we
played and it was perfect, 1

Zimmermann said her
emotions welled up near the
end of the performance.
“I cried,” she said. “At the

edy will be three musi
cians Jan. 20.
Willie Nelson will be at
the Tabernacle and Bryan
Adams is at the Cobb
Energy Centre.
Since they're different
enough in style, those two
each likely will do well.
But the third guy, Kris
Allen, who I feel needs
an honorable mention
here.
Poor guy. Kids audition
for “American Idol” on
the hopes of winning the
over and just couldn’t hold it
in anymore.
“That’s one of the things
you dream of when you're
doing country music is to
play at the Opry.”
The duo met when they
were freshmen at Belmont
University in Nashville, after
Davis spent one year at
North Georgia College &
State University in .
Dahlonega.
“We were in guitar class
together and we were sort of
thrown together as freshmen
and told to get up in front of
the class and make some
thing up, just improvise
something, and we had never
met,” Davis said.
Despite being from totally
different parts of the country
— Davis called Zimmermann
the “north of the Mason-
Dixon half of Striking
Matches” because she’s from
Philadelphia —the combina
tion worked.
“It was like a cruel hazing
thing they did to the fresh
men to play in front of the
seniors ... but we actually
got applause out of the
seniors when we performed
together,” Davis said.
About a year and a half
ago, Striking Matches was
signed by Universal
Publishing, cutting their col
lege careers a little short.
“[Being signed] took me
away from school in order to
start writing full-time and we
started playing shows so
there was no time to devote
to school,” Davis said. “But
everybody was OK with that
because it was like, ‘Well,
show and going on to live
a life of fame and fortune.
In Kris Allen’s case, he
won Season 8 and is still
an unknown. He'll be
playing at Eddie’s Attic,
the place where talent is
discovered.
Allen’s a good singer,
plays several instruments
and is attractive, but he
spent his whole season in
the shadows of Adam
Lambert. Even sad-story

His parents, Bill and Vicki
Davis, said they're proud of
their son’s decision.
“We feel like any other

Davis said. “We’ve watched

Iraheta got more atten

Instead of being a pop
idol, Allen’s still an open

“From where we were at

so exponentially that it’s hard
to even imagine where we’ll

“But I just hope the shows

As for his hometown
