we're also jazzing it up a
bit by incorporating a
cooking school compo
nent that will address
ways in which we can all
improve our odds against
these cancers based on
the choices we make in
the grocery store and our
own kitchens.
This is a free event
(including lunch) thanks
to the American Cancer
Society, but preregistra
tion is required and space
is limited.
Again, our target audi
ence is uninsured women
who have not been
recently screened for
breast or cervical cancer,
but all are welcome.
The workshop will be
hoeld in side-by-side
rooms: one in English
and the other in Spanish
to help extend the educa
tion to a wider audience.
The second workshop
that is just around the
corner moves away from
the health of our bodies
and focuses on the health
of our relationships.

With 2013 in full
swing, | have two excit

that I hope will help get
your year off on the right
track.
As we all know, this is a
popular time of year for
people to work on losing
weight and eating healthi
er. Our diet and physical
activity patterns directly
relate to our overall health
and well-being, including
our risk for certain cancers
and chronic diseases.
Herein lies the purpose
of our first event: “Cooking
for a Lifetime: Cancer
Prevention Cooking
School.”
This “cooking school” is
being offered in partnership
with the American Cancer
Society and is geared
towards women who are
not getting screened for
preventable/treatable dis
eases such as breast and
cervical cancer.
While the purpose of
the event is to increase
awareness about these
cancers and refer unin
sured women to the
proper resources for free

Imagine you're walk
ing up to the front of a
room that is filled with
people. You finally
make it to the front and
you turn to face the
crowd and begin giving
a presentation.
If you're like most
people, just the thought
of public speaking makes
you cringe. Many studies
show that public speak
ing is a top fear for most
people. This fear can alsd
affect children.
4-H Project
Achievement gives youth
the opportunity to over
come public speaking
fear and improve com
munication skills.
It allows youth to cre
ate a project about a topic
of their choice.
Forsyth County 4-H
will play host to County
Project Achievement, or
CPA, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Jan. 29 at Cumming
Elementary School. The
event is open to all
fourth- through sixth
graders.
To compete at CPA, a
child will need to select
an interesting topic, write
a three- to five- minute
speech and create a poster
about the topic.
The poster should be
large enough so people
can see it from a distance
of 10 feet. A prop can also
be included in the project.
Topics can range from
sports, animals, people,
places, science, crafts
and recreation.
Almost any topic can
be made into a 4-H proj
ect. The projects will be
judged and the winners
from all project areas will
be announced at the close
of the event.
If a child competes at
CPA, he or she will be
