Sanitation, selection
key to plant health
plant material from your
garden and disposed of it
immediately. If you
didn’t, thoroughly clgan
the area of all remaining
dropped leaves and
mulch. Diseased plants
should not be put in the
compost bin because the
compost may not reach
high enough temperatures
to kill pathogens.
* Choose an area where
no tomatoes or related
vegetables have grown for
the past three years.
Potatoes, eggplants and.
peppers are in the same
family as tomatoes.
* Have a soil test done
for the proposed tomato
bed and make recom
mended amendments to
provide your tomato
plants with all the nutri
ents they need to grow
well, stay healthy, and
produce edible fruit. Poor
soil nutrition is a major
contributor to some dis
eases, like blossom end
rot, and plants with weak
or poorly developed root
systems are more suscep
tible to pests and diseas
es.
The days are still short
and dark at this point in
winter, but bright, shiny
seed catalogs are arriving
in the mail to give avid
vegetable gardeners a ray
of hope ... and doubt.
I recently received
these questions from Joel:
“Can tomatoes be
grown this year, follow
ing the airborne fungus
suffered in the last (2012)
season? Is there any spe
cial soil preparation, dis
infectant, or preventive
measure which should be
observed or implement
ed?”
These are excellent
questions. And the answer
to both is yes.
Yes, people will grow
tomatoes this year. As
Shirley McClain’s charac
ter Ouiser says in “Steel
Magnolias,” it’s a com
pulsion.

practices you can imple

* Select disease-resis
tant varietjes. Resistance
to particular diseases is
indicated by letters next
to the name. Letter codes
vary by seed seller; look
for a code key in the cata
log. Last year we saw
early blight (Alternaria
leaf spot); late blight; var
ious fungal and bacterial
leaf spot infections;
anthracnose; as well as
the usual suspects,
Fusarium and/ or
Verticillium wilt, tobacco
mosaic virus, and tomato
wilt virus.
Even if you're a fan of
heirloom vegetables, this
might be the year to test
some disease-resistant
hybrids. University of
Georgia lists some rec
ommended varieties here:
For the Forsyth County News
Letters after the variety name indicate resistance
to certain diseases. The letters “VFFNA" mean
that this tomato hybrid is resistant to Verticillium
wilt, Fusarium wilt race 1 and 2, nematodes, and
Alternaria leaf spot (early blight).

leaves when it rains, and
it helps keep weeds out of
your garden.
* Remove weeds
around your garden.
Weeds provide a safe har
bor for insects that spread
vegetable viruses.
* Monitor your plants
daily. Hand-pick damag
ing insects and treat or
remove any diseased
plants immediately. Early
control may prevent
infestations and eliminate
the need for chemical
pesticides.
» Sanitize your tools
after each use to prevent
spreading diseases. Also
try to avoid walking
through the garden; shoes
are another disease
spreading culprit.

* Provide plenty of
space between plants so
that circulating air can

* Apply 2-4 inches of
