five games. [Tonight] we
were not getting one kid
flying to the board, we
were getting two or
three tackling each other

some to see.
“Avery is undersized

Lambert (11-7, 6-3)
held a 49-32 advantage
with 5:48 remaining in
the game, but West fought
back to bring the score
within 11 with under two
minutes left; however, the
rally fell short and left
West winless in region
play.
“I think we have a reoc
curring theme,” West
head coach Jim Cook
said. “We think it's a 25
minute ballgame when
it’s 32 minutes. It seems
like we go through about
a five minute stretch
where we don’t play very
well. It enables teams to
put up a 10,11,12-point
lead and then we're play
ing from behind the rest
of the way, so it’s our
challenge to make sure
we play 32 minutes.”
Lambert will travel to
Johns Creek on Friday,
while West will play at

Longhorn opponents
had averaged 58 points
entering the game, but the
defense stepped up didn’t
allow the West offense
many opportunities.
“Whenever we pick it
up on defense, we score a
lot,” Russell said. “That’s
what we have to do. Our
coaches told us [to pres
sure the ball], so that’'s
what we did.
“I feel like we're get

for the region tournament
and go out there and per

the laziest thing to do, is to
declare oneself finished
with the elevation of sports
figures. Better, that argu

page with box scores only
and let readers worship the
raw numbers rather than the
rawer athletes who produce
them.
Won’t work. The better
players, the better coaches,
will always have the biggest
platforms. What they do
with that is up to them, and
what we do with it will
never change for a variety
of reasons.
For openers, there are so
many skunky sports names
on the police blotter every *
day that the good guys are
given the responsibility for
raising the bar whether they
like it or not. Parents and
youth coacheés point to the
ones with clean records and
will dig through another.
It’s the common urge to
set goals beyond the ordi
nary, and the need to
believe that someone before
us actually possessed the
skill and the stamina to go
as far as we hope to go. The
world of sports is littered
with people like this.
Not a perfett world, of
course, but then neither are
the realms of politics and
entertainment perfect, and
all thre¢ components are
devoured daily in portions
greater than any scientific
journal or sociology study
or calendar of the arts ever
willbe.
So Lance tomes off like
a creep, and Manti Te’o like
a meathead, and the late Joe
Patemo like a,worn-out cog
at the heart of a shockingly
dangerous machine.
The easiest thing to do,

period ahead 40-21, but couldn’t muster
a point for over five minutes until
Jackson sunk two free throws. West
never closed the gap to within single dig

The Lady Wolverines came into the
game averaging 42.7 points on offense, but
shot only 28 percent from the field.
“We have to come out and play [bet
ter],” West head coach David May said.
“The game’s over and we decide we want
to play a few possessions and then go in
[the locker room] and feel good about
ourselves, and that’s not how it’s got to
be.
*...We gave up 29 points in the first half
to a team that’s had a hard time scoring on
the season because we don’t want to guard
anybody. I know we played harder in the
second half, but the game was over by that
time when you’re down 20 points. We have
to do a better job of getting ready to play.”

Following a timeout
by Moon, Brandon
Rapson converted a
three-point play at the
foul line to push North's
lead to six points.
Brandon Marks and
Wade Allen later
knocked down shots
from behind the 3-point
arc and Brooks Blevins
capped off the half with
an improbable 3-pointer.
Blevins caught an

30-18 at the break. .
“That sure helped,”
Moon said of Blevins’

Raiders forward
Brandon Rapson scored
all 10 of his points in the
first half.
North struggled offen

The War Eagles were

to fewer than 15 points,

some stuff off his

Jack Armstrong
scored 10 points for the
War Eagles, who were
without forwards Doug

“We didn’t play well
but found a way to win,
so maybe that’s a great
sign,” Moon said.

When a sports champion
turns out to be a chump,
then, just tell the truth, to
yourself and to the kids.
No man or woman is with
out flaw, no matter the size
of their trophy collection.
No sports event is bigger
than life. No athlete can
succeed at the highest level
without a ton of support
from family and coaches
and teammates, and disap
pointing them would be a
terrible loss in a lifetime of
winning.
Maybe that’s not enough
to close every fresh wound,
but it should be enough to
power past Lance and every
sports scandal to come
without descending entirely
into a world without heroes.
If you think this is bad, try
that.
