Governor’s race
.
generates interest
By Kelly Whitmire

The early voting period for the Nov. 4
General Election is off to a brisk start in
Forsyth County.
Barbara Luth. supervisor of voter registra
tions and elections, said there was a good
crowd nearly every day last week.
“Tuesday was a little bit lower, only because 1t
rained and poured all day, but we've actually, as of
[late Friday afternoon] have voted 4.807 in our
building,” Luth said. :
As expected, the numbers lag behind those of
presidential election year, but the governor’s ruce
between incumbent Republican Nathan Deal and
Democrat Jason Carter has drawn voters.
“It's really meeting up with the gubematorial
lelection].” Luth said. ““We're not lacking there.”
Although there are no local contested races
on the ballot, it contains several other state
offices. including U.S. senator, Georgia school
superintendent and both of the county’s con
gressional seats. Also featured is a transporta
tion:bond referendum in Forsyth.
Absentee voting has also been popular,
according to Luth, in parg due to postcards the
county sent out.
“We've mailed out 1,458 and we've already
received 675 back.” she said. I think when they
sent-the advertisement out that had the absentee
posteards on it, that increased some of our mail
outs that we were getting.” :
For most of this week, voting will be con
ducted only at the county administration
building in downtown Cumming.
Starting Saturday, however, it will expand
to Cumming City Hall, the Hampton Park
Library and the community buildings at
Midway and Sharon Springs parks.
“Saturday from 9 a.m. to. 4 p.m., we're
open in all five locations,” Luth said. “That
following week of Halloween, we're open at
all five locations.”
With the ongoing construction of the new
county courthouse and detention center, park
ing downtown near the administration build
ing parking has been limited. ;
Voters can, however, park at the new deck
off Castleberry Road and behind Cumming
City Hall.
“Even with the construction, we've given
them some more extra parking,” Luth said. “We
haven't really had any complaints about park
ing. It’s not the most convenient, and we realize
that, but they're still coming out.”
Luth said it seems the community is eager
to vote.
“You see all the news ads ... that are out
there, people are just really interested in want
ing to come out and vote.” she said.
