The University of Notre Dame’s marching band practiced and per
formed for the public Friday afternoon at Pinecrest Academy, a private
Catholic school in south Forsyth. The Band of the Fighting Irish was en
route to Tallahassee, Fla., where the school’s football team was sched
uled to face Florida State on Saturday night. The band members spent
the night with members of the Pinecrest community before resuming
their trip Saturday morning.
Cumming man charged in pedestrian’s death

JOHNS CREEK — A driver
from Cumming faces vehicular
homicide and other charges in
connection with the August
death of an 88-year-old Johns
Creek pedestrian.
As of Thursday, 38-year-old
Kristian Lee Hardy remained in

Scam alert — A
woman reported Oct. 9
that someone identify
ing themselves as a law
enforcement officer had
called her to say there
was a warrant for her
arrest for failure to
appear for grand jury
duty. She felt some
thing was wrong about
sending the officer
money but didn’t want
to go to jail and com
plied. There was no offi
cer employed by that
name.

woman reported a
check for SBOO had
been taken Oct. 10 after
two men and a woman
offered to do yardwork
at her house and lay
out pine straw.The
group had originally
quoted the work at
$650, but changed it to
SBOO. They left with it to
get supplies and never
returned.
Spit order — A
McDonald's employee
reported Oct. 11 that a
customer had driven off
after spitting in her

According to Johns Creek
police reports, the incident
on Oct. 9, a man ran
from a house and
jumped into Lake
Lanier. Deputies con
vinced him to return to
the house after finding
out he had a warrant
for criminal trespass.
He was arrested.
Happily never after
— On Oct. 15, a man
claimed he had fallen
victim to a scam
involving a woman he
knew only through an
online dating site but
to whom he was
engaged. She told him
several times, begin
ning at the end of
June, to send her
money to help her get
gold bars she had
inherited. He gave her
a total of SII,OOO to
$12,000.

David Brooks
David Brooks, age 66, of Cumming
passed away Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014.
David was an Aircraft Technician for
both Eastern and Northwest Airlines
and especially enjoyed hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline
Brooks of Cumming; son and daugh
ter-in-law, David and Kellie Brooks of
Lawrenceville, son, Charles Brooks of
Germany; five grandchildren; sister,
Janice Taylor of Florida; brother and
sister-in-law, Tyler and Ellen Brooks
of North Carolina; nieces and neph
ews, Teresa Deese, Bryan Vess,
Tammy McKinney, Chrissie Dykes,
Eric Dykes; and a number of friends.
The family received friends at
Ingratn Funeral Home Saturday, Oct.
18, from 1-7 p.m.

forward to make a right turn.
As he began to turn, Hardy
hit Rafael Diaz Soto in the
crosswalk.

Forever in repair —
A man reported on

been stolen after he
dropped it off at a
repair shop in 2009
for extensive repairs.
He paid $1,500-$2,000
a few months later
but left it for a few
years because it was
not his primary driving
vehicle. When he con
tacted the shop owner
to get it back, it had
been scrapped.

Ralph Cowart
Ralph Cowart, age 86, of Atlanta
passed away Thursday, Oct. 16,
2014. A native of Forsyth County,
Ralph was a member of Bethlehem
Baptist Church. He is preceded in
death by his parents, Arthur and
Bertha Cowart; and his sister and
brother-in-law, Katherine and Ralph
Harris.
Survivors include his wife of 61-%2
years, JoAnn Reid Cowart of Atlanta;
niece, Ann and Greg Perschka; broth
ers-in-law and sisters-in-law, E.H.
Reid and friend Estell Venable, Doug
Reid and friend Julia Rook; Jeannie
and Jack Hartman, Ruth Pirkle, Dow
and Joyce Reid, Becky and Tom
Dunnagan, Diane Martin, Linda and
James Hughes; special friends,
Beverly Stancil and her son, Robby;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held
Monday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. at the
Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with the
Rev. Tom Stradley officiating.
Interment, with Military Honors, will
follow at Georgia National Cemetery
in Canton at 1 p.m.
. The family will receive friends at
Ingram Funeral Home Sunday from
2-9 p.m.
