Reminder: Fireworks tonight,
parade Saturday in Cumming
From staff reports
The city of Cumming will present
its annual fireworks show tonight at
the Cumming Fairgrounds.
The festivities, which are free and
open to the public, begin at 6 p.m. with
vendors and music. The fireworks
extravaganza is slated to start about
9:30 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to arrive
early as the event typically draws a
crowd of 20,000 to 25,000 people.
After the show, folks can wait out traf
fic by watching or participating in the
annual dance contest at 10 p.m. on the
Fairgrounds’ Sawmill Stage.
On Saturday, the 58th Annual
Thomas-Mashburn Steam Engine

The patriotic procession features cars,
floats and the famous steam engines, a
tribute to Forsyth County’s agrarian past.
The weather forecast for both today
and Saturday calls for a high tempera
ture near 80 degrees and an increasing
chance of thunderstorms as the day
wears on.
Parade-goers are encouraged to wear
sunscreen, stay hydrated and bring hear
ing protection, such as earmuffs or ear
plugs.
Following the parade, children ages
18 and younger can bring their turtles to
The Foster House, 305 West Main St. in
downtown Cumming, for the restau
rant’s 13th annual turtle race.
Registration starts at 12:30 p.m., with
racing set for 1 p.m.

Benny Lamar
Nuckolis Sr.
Benny Lamar Nuckolls
Sr., age 83, a lifelong res
ident of Forsyth County,
passed away peacefully
June 29, 2015.
He is preceded in death
by his parents, Truman
and Nellie Nuckolls;
father and mother-in-law,
Harold and Frances
Goodwin; brother-in-law,
Bill Goodwin.
Mr. Nuckolls graduated
from Cumming High
School in 1950 and began
work at Rich’s Warehouse
and Bagwell and Mathis
Service Station before
joining the military,
where he served in the
U.S. Navy for three years.
In 1955 Benny began his
career at Sawnee EMC,
retiring in 1994. He
began work as a Ford
dealer transport driver for
local Billy Howell Ford
and Chestatee Ford in
1996. He was a member
of the Forsyth County
Lions Club and named a
Melvin Jones Fellow. As
a Charter Member of
Cumming Baptist
Church, he served as dea
con for 15 years, and
attended The Chapel
Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his
loving wife, Katherine
Goodwin Nuckolls;
daughter, Kim Davis; son,
Lamar Nuckolls Jr.; son,
Michael Nuckolls; grand
son, Taylor Nathaniel
Davis of Cumming; dog,
Charlie; sister, Sandra
(Morris) Williams of
Cumming; sister, Bettie
(Charles) Williams of
Decatur; sister-in-law,
Anita Parsons of
Douglasville; sister-in
law, Pat (CW) Page of
Douglasville; and several
nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 2
p.m. Thursday, July 2, at
Cumming Baptist
Church. Interment fol
lowed at Sawnee View
Memorial Gardens with
Dr. Barry Crocker and the
Rev. Roger Williams offi
ciating.

John Joseph
Dumphy
John Joseph Dumphy,
age 78, of Cumming
passed away Saturday,
June 27, 2015.
Born Aug. 29, 1936 in
Worcester, Mass., to the
late T. Francis and Mary
Dumphy, he had lived in
Forsyth County since
2006 having moved from
Keller, Texas. Mr.
Dumphy was a graduate
of St. John’s High School
in Worcester, earned a
law degree from Boston
University and received
an Undergraduate Degree
from The College of the
Holy Cross in Worcester.
He practiced law in
Springfield, Mass., until
his retirement. John was a
U. S. Marine Corp veter
an, was a member of
Good Shepherd Catholic
Church, enjoyed golf and
was an avid Red Sox fan.
He is preceded in death
by a brother, Timothy
Francis Dumphy.
Surviving is his wife of
53 years, Betsy Dumphy,
Cumming; sons and
daughters-in-law, Jay and
Cathy Dumphy, Palatine,
I1l.; Charley and Deb
Dumphy, Dawsonville;
grandchildren, Colin
Dumphy, Olivia Dumphy,
Joe Dumphy; sister,
Maribeth McGowan,
Ariz.; brother, Fr. Charles
Dumphy, Shrewsbury,
Mass.; and a number of
other relatives.
A funeral mass will be
held Friday, July 3, at 10
p.m. at Good Shepherd
Catholic Church. Fr.
Frank Richardson and Fr.
Charles Dumphy will
officiate. Interment will
be held in Georgia
National Cemetery at a
later date.
In lieu of flowers,
