Much like his peers at Pinecrest
Academy, Carter Pritchett is a 5-year
old brimming with energy and ideas.
He likes playing on the playground
and learning about Christmas. His
favorite color is blue, and he’s partial to
his trusty shark blanket, which he pulled
Wednesday afternoon from a cubbyhole
outside his classroom, presenting it
proudly.
When asked about the ashes on his
forehead, he said it’s simple, really.
“It’s so that Jesus knows we’re his
friend,” Pritchett said, punctuating the
words with a sunny smile.
Pritchett was among other children,
teachers and parents who participated in
Ash Wednesday at Pinecrest. Young
people in High School, the Lower
School and Middle School celebrated
the beginning of Lent — or the season
of fasting and prayer.
Father David Steffy, president of
Pinecrest Academy, explained Lent as

Sherift’s office increases
presence at area schools
By Frank Reddy

On Valentine’s Day in south Florida, a 19 year
old barged into his former high school armed
with an AR-15 rifle and started shooting inno
cent, young people. ;
The former student somehow gained entry
into the school — which he’d been kicked out of
for disciplinary reasons — and killed 17 stu
dents. More than 20 were wounded. It was the
nation’s fourth-worst school shooting in history
and the 18th school shooting in the United
States just this year.
On Thursday afternoon, Forsyth County
Schools issued a news release reiterating that
the district has “extensive school safety plans”
in place and works closely with the local sher
iff’s office to conduct active shooter drills. |
“Forsyth County Schools works to create and
maintain a safe and healthy environment at our
schools for our students, staff and visitors,” the
release stated. “We understand and share your
concerns about safety relative to the school
shooting in Florida. In light of yesterday’s trage
dy, all principals are reviewing their school safe
ty procedures and protocol.”
In the release, Forsyth County Schools
Superintendent Jeff Bearden advised that par
ents speak with their children “about the impor
tance of communication ... if they see, hear, or
suspect something, they need to report their
concerns immediately to a parent, teacher, SRO
