Chris Barger sat in his county vehicle on a
drizzly Tuesday morning, talking on the phone
with Chattahoochee Nature Center. The week
prior, he’d delivered an injured red-tailed hawk
to the group and was calling to see how it was
doing.
The verdict was plain to anyone who under
stands basic body language. The man sighed,
looking down. The bird of prey had died.
Barger, a deputy first class with the Forsyth
County Sheriff’s Office who specializes in ani
mal control, is admittedly an animal lover.
That’s why it’s hard sometimes doing this job.
For instance, this most recent case involving
a homeowner who spotted the aforementioned
red-tailed hawk, looking sickly in the backyard
of their Old Atlanta Road residence. - "
Rescuing and removing the bird from their
backyard was the easy part. Delivering the rap
tor to Chattahoochee Nature Center — a pri
vate, non-profit environmental attraction in
Roswell — well, that was also easy.
But, it’s difficult when animals die despite
Barger’s best efforts.
“I absolutely love animals,” Barger said. “I
think hawks are very majestic, beautiful ani
mals. 1 believe they are exquisite animals, and
the fact that I have the skillset to be able to
pick one up and take it and hopefully get it
rehabilitated and possibly released, it makes
my day. It’s why I do this job.”

For the first time since May 2016, Lake Lanier is
at its full level.
As of Tuesday morning, the lake reached about
1,070.5 feet above sea level, about half a foot
above the lake's winter full pool fevel. The Take
was last at full pool in summer 2016, meaning the
lake did not reach that level at all in 2017.
“Our goal is to refill Lake Lanier every year
there’s a drawdown,” said James Hathorn, chief of
water management for the U.S. Army Corps of
W’W.Dism “By reaching elevation
1,070, we're now at the winter level, and ‘at that
level, we can meet all of our project purposes at the
desired level.”
Hathorn said among those project purposes
helped by having a full lake include water supply,
water clarity, navigation on the lake, recreation and
hydropower. :
Corps officials aren’t the only ones happy to see
the lake level up. .
“] think the impact when the lake is fuller, it just
brings a different energy to the lake,” said Kenny
Haddock, general manager at Habersham Marina,
located in Forsyth County. “It always has, especially

According to Cpl. Doug Rainwater with
Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Roberts was
identified through social media.
Rainwater said the suspect left the store with cash
from the register. While the suspect allegedly never
produced a weapon, he is charged with armed
robbery because he told the clerk he had a gun.
He is being held at Forsyth County Jail with
out bond.
The level of Lake Lanier has fluctuated
in recent years. Below is a look at the
