Basketball state playoff previews | Second round

Meadowcreek

When, where: Tonight, 7, in Suwanee
Records, rankings, seedings:
Lambert is 22-5, unranked and the No. 1
. seed from Region 5; Meadowcreek is
20-6, ranked No. 8 and the No. 2 seed
from Region 7.
What to know: The West Forsyth
boys drew a brutal first-round matchup
in Duluth, who wound up routing the
Wolverines, and now Lambert has the
pleasure of meeting a powerful
Gwinnett County program. The .
Mustangs ground out a 43-32 win
against South Gwinnett in the first
round, and their scoring totals through
out the season suggest that they’re more
comfortable with low scoring totals than
the run-and-shoot Longhorns. But that
trait doesn’t indicate a lack of quality:
Meadowcreek took Paul VI, a power
house program froni the Washington,
D.C. area, to overtime on Dec. 28 in an
eventual loss, and their last two losses to
Norcross, possibly the best team in
Class 7A, were by just one point. The
Longhorns are still hot, coming off an -
85-61 win over Mill Creek in the first
round, and their chances at extending
their season hinge on them maintaining
that temperature. " :

World Cup starts. By
contrast, Mikaela
Shiffrin, who won the

Ledecka’s best super-G
finish? 19th. Her best
finish in all events came
in a December downhill,
where she finished 10th.
She had never won a
medal in an international
skiing event before
Saturday.
There were even
reports circulating that
Ledecka had borrowed a
pair of Shiffrin’s used
skis for her winning run.
Those reports were
denied by Shiffrin’s
mother.
Ledecka wasn’t both

herself a snowboarder,

the World

considered a strong con

She had no expecta

snowboard coach, Justin

Lambert is 18-9, unranked and the No. 3
seed from Region 5; Newton is 24-3,
ranked No. 5 and the No. 1 seed from
Region 8
What to know: The Longhorns are at
the point in their season where every
game could be head coach Jaime
Fisher’s last with the team, as Fisher is
stepping down after the season to spend
more time with her family. Lambert
extended Fisher’s run with a first-round
comeback win over Mill Creek, but top
ping the Rams looks like a considerably
more difficult task: Newton has been
rolling since losing to South Gwinnett
on Jan. 25, winning its five games since
then by an average margin of 23 points.

the No. 1 seed from Region 5-7 A;

“I feel like we did a great job in the
first and fourth quarter on defense,”
Bracco said. “I’m just extremely proud
of the boys and the way they came out
and competed all night.”
With just under three minutes to play,
Stoudamire’s third-dunk of the quarter
put the exclamation point on the route,
giving him his 12th point of the game
and making him one of three Longhorns
to finish with double digits in scoring,
joining Ganote and Jordan Mcilwain
who had 17.
“She just wanted to come
here and be the first per
son ever to ski and snow
board race. She stayed in
her heart and she stayed
in her own head, and
skied like she can ski, and
it was beautiful to watch.”
Unless you were Anna
Veith of Austria, the
defending Olympic
champion. Veith
appeared to have been the
first woman to defend her
Olympic title in the
super-G.
Even when Ledecka’s
split times started coming
in showing her close to
Veith, no one seemed
concerned. Ledecka’s
had fast splits before.
“She could never put it all
together,” Sofia Goggia
of Italy told the New York
Times. “But today, she
did.”
When Ledecka crossed
the finish line, her time
popped up right behind a
big number 1. By a sin
gle hundredth of a sec
ond. A distance of less
than ten inches.
“My first reaction was,
‘ls this possible?’” Veith
told the Times.
Ledecka’s reaction was
priceless: no reaction at
all__Expressionless. A
blank stare. She gazed at
the scoreboard and at the
scene unfolding around
her as if totally detached.
“I thought they were
going to put a couple
more seconds on my
as the Raiders earned a non-region vic
tory Monday on the road.
Clayton Bardall, Garrett Staton and
Caleb Vercek each drove in a run, while
Vercek led North with two hits.
BOYS LACROSSE
Lambert 17, Alpharetta 1
ALPHARETTA - Gerard Kane led a
balanced scoring effort with four goals
as the Longhorns cruised to an Area
5-6/7A victory Monday on the road.
Kyle Lewis and Benny O’Rourk had
“three goals each for Lambert (2-0, 2-0),
while Ryan Overbay added two goals.
Phil White won 92 percent of faceoffs
for the Longhorns. 25
time,” she recalled at her
press conference. “I was
waiting forit” . =
And then? “Nothing
was happening, and
everybody was scream- -
ing.”
A moment later, real
ization still hadn’t settled
in. Asked by Heather
Cox of NBC if she had
absorbed what had just
happened, Ledecka
replied, “I still absorb. I
don’t know what went on
out there.”
So unprepared was
Ledecka for the spotlight
that she wore her ski gog
gles to her press confer
ence. When asked why,
she said, “Because I was
not as prepared as the
other girls that would be
at the ceremony.” She
then revealed that she
hadn’t even bothered to
put on makeup before the
race.
The amount of time and
effort required to train for
an Olympic event leaves
little time for anything
else. But to train, and
qualify for, two separate
and distinct events, seems
incredible in and of itself.
But medaling in two
different sports in the
same Olympics? That’sa
rare feat indeed. We
haven’t seen that happen
in 114 years. In 1904 in
St. Louis, Joe Lydon won
a bronze medal in boxing,
and a silver in soccer.
It’s hard to imagine
opening round against Mountain View, a
team with ample size and quickness. It
was a closer game through three quar
ters, but North got its offense figured
out in the fourth and outscored the Bears
26-1 in that period. This matchup looks
considerably more favorable for the
Raiders: Grayson is 16-10 and, back in
December, lost 67-47 to Lambert, who
North beat by 16 points on Jan. 19.
What’s next: The winner of
Campbell and Hillgrove in the Class 7A
quarterfinals.

Pinecrest is 16-8, unranked and the No.
12 seed in Class lA-Private; Prince
Avenue is 24-2, ranked No. 9 and the
No. 9 seed in Class lA-Private
What to know: This matchup is real
ly a shot in the dark: Prince Avenue has
the advantage in ranking and record, but
the teams’ track records are wildly dif
ferent, as Pinecrest mostly played area
private schools, while the Wolverines
stuck to smaller public programs. The
Paladins and Wolverines have one oppo

Pinecrest beat 66-26 and 68-42 and
whom Prince Avenue beat 75-25 and -
59-37. That doesn’t help, guys! If the
combo of Regina Metz and Maddie
Lynch stays productive, though —the

game. But Hurt also reminded his
team of the positives from the year,
like the completion of the first winning
season in the history of the program
and the dramatic improvement shown
throughout: West entered the region
schedule with a losing record, and the
Ledecka , a skier, beating
all those snowboarders.

No. 6 and the No. 1 seed from Region 7
What to know: Back in November,
the War Eagles volleyball team, facing a
lower seed and a road matchup, went
into the Blue Devils’ house in the sec
ond round of the state playoffs and got
the win to move on to the quarterfinals.
Unfortunately, this is basketball season,
and this Norcross team hasn’t lost a
game since December. Norcross has a
potent guard duo in Morgan Robinson-
Nwagwu and Myra Strickland, and
senior post Devyn Wilson had commit
ted to play in college at George Mason.
The senior-driven War Eagles have
shown grit lately, upsetting Lambert in
the region semifinals and taking a tight
win over North Gwinnett in the first
round of the playoffs, but they’ll be seri
ously pushed in this matchup.
