Longhorns lose 45-40

The Covington News
COVINGTON. — Jaime Fisher
couldn’t have asked for a better effort
from her team in her last game as the
Lambert Longhorns’ head coach. !
In the end, however, it was Newton
pulling out a 45-40 win in the girls’
Class 7A state tournament’s second
round, but not before Lambert almost
completed an improbable comeback.
At the end of the third quarter, the
Rams carried a 38-22 lead, and it looked
like they would run away easily from
Lambert, as they turned up the pressure
on the Longhorns defensively and final
ly started getting transition buckets and
more scoring from players other than
Lexii Chatman, who had a game-high
23 points, including five 3-pointers.
But in the first 1 minute 30 seconds of
the fourth quarter, Lambert connected
on as many 3-point baskets (three) as it
had total field goals in the entire third
period. Reagan Pasonski buried back-to
back treys within 35 seconds of each
other, and then Summer Edwards sank
one at the top of the key at the 6:28
mark to chop Newton’s lead to seven at
38-31.
It took the Rams almost three minutes
before Jurnee Smith scored the team’s
first basket of the final stanza, but
Lambert kept coming. \
With Newton still up by six, Sidney
goal.
Maddy Schulte earned the shutout in
goal for the Longhorns (2-1-1, 1-0).
North dropped to 4-1-0 overall and
0-1 in the region.

Alex Guzman had the other goal for
Central (3-2-1, 0-1 Region 5-7 A), while
Jesus Bohorquez and Juan Gonzalez
combined for the shutout in goal.

" Hayden Fontana had a hat-trick as the
Longhorns cruised to a Region 5-7 A
victory Friday on the road.
Lambert (2-1-1, 1-0) also got goals
from Thomas Powers and Logan
Racine. Lo
.North dropped to 1-3-1 and 0-1.
Chason got fouled, but missed the front
end of a one-in-one. However, Katie
Schwind was there for the rebound and
put-back. Edwards stole the ensuing
inbounds pass and made a layup, to
make the score 39-37 Newton.
On Newton’s next possession, Smith
scored on a lay-in to make it 41-37, but
Lambert chopped it back down to two
with Jaleah Greene’s pretty step-back
jumper at the 2:30 mark.
Lambert made a key mistake with
under a minute left in regulation and a
chance to tie or take the lead when a
Longhorn threw an errant pass that was
stolen by Newton’s Takiya Cotton. -
That led to free throws from Chatman,
followed by foul shots from Smith and
Diamond Swift down the stretch to seal
the win and a state quarterfinal appear
ance for Newton. ;
It was clear from the onset that
Lambert wanted to slow the game down
and take Newton out of its transition
game comfort zone. And for much of
the first half it worked, Lambert, despite
giving up six quick points in the first
quarter, settled in and stymied the Rams
offensively while going into the second
quarter down 9-6.
Both teams played fairly evenly in the
second quarter as Newton took an 18-16
lead into halftime, before outscoring
Lambert 20-6 in the pivotal third.
Greene led Lambert with 14 points,
while Edwards and Pasonski chipped in
with 10 apiece. Lambert finished its
2017-18 season with an 18-10 record
overall, failing to advance to the state
quarterfinals for the second straight sea
son.
FROM 1B
scoring her second goal
of the game, Central’s
Hailey Ririe maneuvered
her way through South
defenders from behind
the goal to cut the War
‘Eagles’ lead to 7-4. :
—“We called a time out
in the first half,” Pearre
said. ““We had to fix
some things that maybe
we weren’t doing well,
just as our team, clean up
some basic stuff, but the
kids turned ‘it around. We
played a great second
half”
Pearre’s squad respond
ed by scoring 10 unan
swered goals, turning a
back-and-forth first half
into a 17-4 route.
“We were a little slow
to start, but then we fin
ished it well,” said Izzy
Parker, who led the game
with five scores on six
shots. “I’m just really
proud of my team.”
The War Eagles used
dominant draw control to
maintain possession of
the ball for the majority
of the game, winning 13
draws to Central’s six, led
by senior Camryn Klauss,
who had eight.
“It comes from me and
the people I work with on
the draw, we’ve worked
together our whole

lacrosse career,” Klauss
said. “I can just look at
them, and they know
which side of the circle
I’m going to put it on.”
While the War Eagles’
attack out-shot Central,
26-11, with five different
players scoring multiple
goals, it was what hap
pened after the shots that
helped South maintain
contro] of the ball for the
vast majority of the game.
“We played very well
on our ride and our re
defend,” Pearre said,
whose squad harassed
Central’s attempts to clear
and created numerous
turnovers. “We really
emphasized that in prac
tice, and the kids are
doing a good job of that,
and when they do they
see that it’s successful.”
