Cover crops feed soil
As gardeners and farm
ers, we expect to reap
direct benefits from the
seeds that we sow. We
nurture our little plants
into big ones anticipating
the harvest that will nur
ture our families, our live
stock, or our livelihood. -
With this mindset of tak
ing crops, the idea of
planting a crop to leave it
dead in the field seems
nonsensical. Yet, that is
essentially the.idea
behind cover crops.
Sometimes called
‘“‘green manure,” cover
crops are slotted into the
interval between cash
crop rotations. Grains, .
legumes, and brassicas
are the primary. species
Zrown as COver Crops.
While all of these can
yield an edible product,
as cover crops, their pur
pose is to protect and
improve the soil that pro
vides the basis of health
for cash crops. Cover
crops are killed in the
field — mechanically,
naturally or chemically
— before they mature to
productive stages.
At a minimum, cover
crops prevent soil erosion
and provide weed control
both as they grow and
after they are killed. With’

relieving soil compaction.
Erosion prevention
Without plants to hold
soil in place, wind and
water quickly carry it
away. Topsoil that’s lost

of years to replace.
During active growth and

Plant stalks slow and

cover crops improve -
water infiltration, and the
biomass of plant matter
helps soil retain moisture.
Weed control
Grain plants are the
best cover crop for weed
control. During active
growth, grains form dense
stands that choke out
weeds.

Soil improvement
An ideal soil contains
3-5 percent organic mat
ter, 45 percent mineral
matter, and enough pore
space between soil com
ponents to allow air and
water, in equal parts, to
make up the balance.
Because of our warm,
humid climate, organic
matter breaks down.very

As the plant parts of
cover crops decompose,
both on the soil surface
and below it, they eco
nomically restore organic
matter and nourish
microbes that enhance
soil fertility. Leguminous
cover crops work with
soil bacteria to sequester
nitrogen in nodules on the
roots. This nitrogen is
released to the cash crop
as the cover crop root sys
tem breaks down. The

Cover Crop Workshop for Forage Producers
Planting cover crops has proven to be a valuable practice in row crop
production, but has also has application in forage systems. The UGA
Cover Crop Team planted numerous cover crop species last fall at the
Northwest Georgia Research and Education Center in Floyd County to
evaluate their performance, including their forage value and response to
grazing.
From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 21, we're hosting a free Cover Crop
Workshop for Forage Producers at the research center. Licensed pesti
cide applicators who attend will receive four (4) hours of CEUs for
Category 21, or one (1) hour of CEUs for private license holders. For
details and registration information, visit http:/extension.uga.edu/coun
ty-offices/forsyth.html. ‘
