Council adopts ordinance
for local massage parlors
By Kelly Whitmire

The city of Cumming will
crack down on potential illegal
activity at massage businesses
in the city.
At a work session on
Tuesday, members of the
Cumming City Council voted
5-0 to approve a new massage
parlor ordinance.
“It’s a comprehensive set of
licensing and regulations where
someone who is going to work
in a massage parlor, if they are
pot a licensed massage therapist
by the state of Georgia, they are
fingerprinted and [receive a]
background check,” said City
Attorney Kevin Tallant.
Forsyth County has had a
similar ordinance since 2015
and is seeking to strength it.

And when Strecker, took
the stage amid thunderous
applause from his peers
and community leaders, he
became the 2018 Forsyth
County Teacher of the
Year.
“To me, teaching is not
just a profession. It’s also
not a vocation as it is
sometimes called. For me
it is a lifestyle,” Strecker
said.
“To be quite honest, I
always thought a teacher
of the year award was
somewhat silly, because
how can you choose one
teacher from one school,
let alone from a whole
county. There are so many
talented and dedicated
teachers in this room, that
I really don’t know how
people can compare one
to another,” he said.

Tallant said the city had been
approached by Forsyth County
Sheriff Ron Freeman about hav
ing a uniform policy in the
county and city.
“This is obviously the result
of problems we’ve had with
massage parlors having inap
propriate sexual activity going
on inside,” Tallant said. “It’s
been going on for quite a while,
but in the last 12 months, I
know we’ve had a couple of
instances both in the unincorpo
rated county and city.”
Forsyth County has not yet
adopted changes to the ordi
nance.
Under the new rules, Freeman
and the sheriff’s office would
conduct investigations into such
businesses before the Cumming
Police Department handled vio
lations.

As part of his Forsyth
County Teacher of the
Year award, Strecker will
also represent the district
in the Georgia Teacher of
the Year program, and
will be eligible to advance
to the national level.
During the event,
Strecker thanked his fami

saying that without them
he would not have made it
as far as he did.
“A great teacher can
only be a great teacher, if
he or she has great stu
dents. If none of my stu
dents had learned German
over the past four years, |
wouldn’t be standing here
right now,” he said.
“I certainly do not
claim to be the best teach
er in this room, but I do
claim that I have the best
students.”
Strecker was also pre
sented with the lease to a
