Annual chamber event
. Pz . i >
highlights what's new
in Forsyth County
By Kelly Whitmire
kwhitmire@forsythnews.com
On each side of the Forsyth Conference
Center at Lanier Technical College on Friday
evening, large, red letters spelling out FoCo
stood behind speakers as they shared “ideas
worth spreading” at the Cumming-Forsyth
County Chamber of Commerce’s annual
event.
'With chamber officials trying something new
this year instead of a traditional awards ceremo
ny in the past, the eyent, called “FoCo Talks,”
was an homage to TED Talks, a series of live
talks and videos featuring experts and others
speakers sharing ideas, and similarly had speak
ers sharing ideas and developments impacting
Forsyth County and local businesses.

“Everyone has heard of TED Talks —
Technology, Education and Design — and the
concept behind a TED Talk is that there -are
ideas that are worth spreading,” said Kevin
McDonough, chairman of the chamber, near
the beginning of the event. “We as a chamber
have ideas worth spreading, so we are going
to borrow that for some FoCo Talks.”
With the stages facing.each other, a speaker
would begin on one stage before passing off
to their counterpart across the room. The
event also featured a pair of intermissions to
allow more time for chamber members to
mingle.
- Here are some of the ideas worth sharing
from the ceremony. -

Anni€’ at Playhouse
By Brian Paglia

* Thursday and Friday nights have
been harder lately for the Goode fami
ly. By the time they’re done helping
put on ‘Annie’ at the Cumming
Playhouse, their unit of five isn’t usu
ally home until after 11 p.m.
“You just have to get used to the
lack of sleep that there is,” said
Reece, . 11.
Still, they’ve relished being a part
of the production, and others have
too. As many as four entire families
are involved in the local show that fin
ishes its run this weekend.
That’s been a fitting dynamic.
‘Annie’ began as a comic strip in the
19205, which in turn inspired a
Broadway musical that eventually
became a popular movie in the ’Bos,
all of which center around the journey
of a young orphan, Annie, and the
search for her real parents in a story
that touches on themes of family and
identity.
The Goode family got involved
when Reece missed out on a chance
to participate in her school’s produc
tion of the musical. The show was for
sixth-graders and older; Reece is the
in the fifth grade. '
But the drama teacher asked
Reece’s dad, Joe, to perform in the
role of Daddy Warbucks, a wealthy
industrialist who eventually adopts
Annie. He accepted and used the
opportunity to get Reece involved
backstage as much as possible.

Along with the VFW, leaders of other local
veterans groups American Legion Post 307 and
Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1030, who
rotate hosting the ceremony, will read the names
of Forsyth County’s World War I service mem
bers on the 100th anniversary of the end of the
war.
“We hope to honor any and all veterans of
Cumming, Forsyth County, Georgia and the US,
with emphasis this year on WWIL,” said VFW
