American Red Cross seeks donations
during Sickle Cell Awareness Month

From staff reports
The American Red Cross is call
ing on community members to
donate blood to help ease patients’
pain through September for Sickle
Cell Awareness Month.
According to the nonprofit, sickle
cell disease is the most common
inherited blood disorder in the U.S.,
impacting more than 100,000 peo
ple mostly of African descent.
For many with the disease, regu
lar blood transfusions are critical to
managing extreme pain and life-
threatening complications. But
patients may develop an immune
response against blood from donors
that is not closely matched with
their own.
The nonprofit stated that because
most Black individuals have unique
structures on their red blood cells
that are not often found in other
donor populations, 1 in 3 Black
blood donors are a match for those
with sickle cell disease.
For this reason, the Red Cross is
emphasizing the need for a more
diverse pool of donors in
September.
They have worked with partners
in the Black community to help
grow the number of blood donors
who are Black across the U.S.
through their sickle cell initiative,
which first launched in 2021.
In the first year of the initiative,
the number of first-time Black blood
donors increased by 60%. Now, the
nonprofit is teaming up with com
munity organizations such as the
National Pan-Hellenic Council to
continue hosting blood drives and
inspiring others to donate.
