1 dead in crash that knocked out power

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office
is investigating the death of a Gwinnett
County man in a single-vehicle crash
over the weekend.
According to an FCSO news release,
Robert Meyer, 33, of Dacula was pro
nounced dead at the scene of a single
vehicle crash on Chattahoochee Road
just west of Shady Grove Road on
Friday, Sept. 30. Deputies and mem
bers of the Forsyth County Fire
Department responded to the crash at
about 10:20 p.m. on Friday.
According to the release, Meyer, who
was driving a 2007 Chevrolet
Silverado, was traveling west on
Chattahoochee and “failed to negotiate
the curve, and the Silverado left the
roadway and struck a power pole.”
Homes in the area reportedly lost
power on Friday night due to the crash.
The wreck is under investigation by
the FCSO Traffic Specialists Unit, and
speed appears to be a factor, per the
release.

Below is your guide to this year’s festival.
Operation hours: 4-10 p.m., Monday-
Thursday; 4 p.m. to midnight, Friday; 10 a.m. to
midnight, Saturday; 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday.
Fair admission: Ages 10 and under can enter
for free: Ages 11 and up $10; Cash and credit
cards accepted and ATMs are on-site; no re-entry
once inside fairgrounds.

A retail project with an arcade, mini golf course,
bowling alley and hotel are moving forward to the
Board of Commissioners after receiving a recom
mendation of approval at the latest planning board
meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
Applicant SI Properties LLC has requested to
rezone approximately nine acres from single-family
residential district to commercial business district for
a 31,800-square-foot indoor commercial recreational
facility with 124 parking spaces along with retail and
restaurants in commercial buildings totaling 16,400
square feet with 84 parking spaces.
The applicant also requested conditional-use per
mits for a 50,068-square-foot hotel with 140 parking
spaces, an outdoor commercial recreational facility,
electronic game playing center and bowling alley.
The land in question is located at 2310 Peachtree
Parkway near Sentinel Chase Way.
Variances were requested to reduce the percentage
of electric vehicle-capable spaces from 9% to 2.3% ;
increase the percentage of parking that fronts the
main buildings’ entrances from 60% to 100%;
increase the maximum building height for Building 3
from 40 feet to 60 feet; reduce the pedestrian land
scape zone on the south side of Building 1, the east
side of Building 4 and a portion of the south side of

Forsyth County Sheriff s Office, UNG welcome inaugural class to new Public Safety Academy

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and
the University of North Georgia held a
welcoming ceremony Monday, Oct. 3, for
the inaugural class of their new public
safety academy.
The UNG Public Safety Academy of
Forsyth County was formed in partnership
with the FCSO as a way for agencies to
offer more advanced training for their stu
dents and officers in Forsyth and across
metro Atlanta.
“We wanted to have a better trained offi
cer for the future ... because we want to
leave it better than we found it,” said Dr.
Butch Newkirk, the academy director.
“And that’s the biggest thing right now.”
