Electric air taxi
company plans
$118M Georgia factory
ATLANTA — A California company
seeking to build small electric aircraft says
it will invest $118 million to construct a
plant near Atlanta, eventually hiring up to
1,000 people.
Archer Aviation, based in Santa Clara,
California, said Monday that it would seek
to build its aircraft adjoining an airport in
Covington, Georgia.
Archer is one of many companies trying
to build electric air taxis. Archer’s plan
involves a battery-powered vertical takeoff
and landing craft with six propellers, hold
ing four passengers and a pilot. The pro
pellers would pivot allowing the aircraft to
take off and land like a helicopter and fly
like a plane.
The idea is that such craft could be used
for short flights, especially in urban areas.
United Airlines last week said it would fly
the craft from downtown Manhattan to
United’s hub at Newark Liberty
International Airport in New Jersey, cut
ting a trip that can take an hour by car in
congested traffic to 10 minutes.

Park
Sports Group, said
while there are similar
projects existing around
the country today, SoFo
Sports Group’s business
model is what will set this
park apart from the others.
According to Grade,
SoFo Sports Group will
own and operate all events
held on the diamond
fields outside and “almost
all of the events in our
indoor facility.”
“This enables us to con
trol all of the revenue
streams such as registra
tion, gate, concessions,
merchandise, housing and
sponsorships,” Grade said.
This “sustainable
model” will provide an
economic impact to the
county, he said, likely
generating over $150 mil
lion each year through
tournaments and other
event hosting.
SoFo Sports Group rep
resentative Rick Nielsen
said the park would be
located on about 62 acres
of land at the intersection
of Brookwood Road and
Peachtree Parkway.
During discussion,
District 4 Commissioner
Cindy Jones Mills asked
if the sports park would
affect county parks and
recreation ball registra
tions. Assistant County
Manager Brandon
Kenney said he did not
think the sports park
would negatively affect
county ball registration.
Grade also mentioned
that SoFo Sports Group
has talked with Forsyth
County Schools and the
county’s parks and recre
ation department to see
how local athletes can uti
lize the facilities, and he
said he has been in discus
sion with commissioners
on how to share generated
revenues with the county
in the future.
District 3
Commissioner Todd
Levent said he had some
uncertainty about approv
ing the economic incen
tive package, but he liked
the proposed plan for the
park.
County Attorney Ken
Jarrard said approving the
economic sports package
would be like the “formal
beginning of the begin
ning.”
Approval would show
the board’s general sup
port of the idea and allow
SoFo Sports Group to
reach out to investors.
When “everyone is gath
ered,” Jarrard said, then
negotiations with the
county would begin.
' ABOUT US AND OUR VALUES
The public has a right to know, and
the Forsyth County News is dedicat
ed to that principle and the “contin
ued enlightenment and freedom of
the people of North Georgia,” as
engraved outside our building.
The pursuit of truth is a fundamen
tal principle of journalism. But the
truth is not always apparent or
known immediately.
A professional journalist’s role is
to report as completely and impar
tially as possible verifiable facts so
readers can, based on their own
knowledge and experience, deter
mine what they believe to be the
truth. That is often an ongoing pur
suit as journalists work to uncover
stories and follow those stories
wherever they lead, regardless of
preconceived ideas.
The news they report is separate
from the opinions shared in the
pages of the FCN, which include
those by its columnists, political car
toonists and readers who submit let
ters to the editor.
The presentation of both news and
opinions is designed to educate,
entertain and foster community con
versation. Readers are encouraged to
challenge and sharpen their percep
tions based on that presentation.
And we encourage readers to do
the same for us, offering news tips,
criticisms and questions.
